AARP, any real advantages?
(this will be a fun topic!)
Ok, don't hit me with the anti-gun thing, I already know...
With all the come-on letters I'm getting from them, are there any perks or extras that make them worth the $10-$12 a month?
(other than the FREE insulated trunk organizer)
Since I'm now officially 'chronically advantaged', I've hit that medicare thing, got supplemental insurance arranged.
Retirement just a rock's throw away - month or months, depending on how I'm feeling.
Can bail anytime, but there's new management and stupid stuff going on at my company and I want to watch the circus.
They sound like the same NRA solicitation letters, minus the Wayne Lapierre drama.
Comments, better ideas?
(looks like Harbor Freight has same organizer or maybe a better one for $13.99)

Re: AARP, any real advantages?
You can get all the same benefits without joining an anti-2A organization. That alone is a deal breaker

Re: AARP, any real advantages?
I generally throw anything from AARP in the garbage due to the organization's past hatred of firearms ownership, but maybe they have changed their tune. I have AAA, which sort of overlaps some of their supposed benefits. I will say that by booking a lot of motels and car rentals via online sites like Kayak, the Internet "deals" tend to make any AAA or AARP discounts useless.
Re: AARP, any real advantages?
I used to reply to them when they enclosed an envelope that did not need a stamp! Empty just to make them spend their money .Since they stopped that I just throw it away. If one is interested in such programs there are pro 2nd amendment organizations the offer the same or close to the same benefits!

Re: AARP, any real advantages?
I would NEVER sell my soul to a socialist, anti-gun organization, I don't give a d*** WHAT the 'benefits' are to me personally. No f***** way...!
Look at AMAC instead - same 'benefits' only not socialist, and not anti-gun...

Gee, guys, don't hold back...(grin)
Rough audience tonight.
Initial research, not seeing anything good either.
Don't travel much now, because, plague.
We will later after I do retire and she gets kicked out of her job next year. (long story, company is closing her remote building)
We're v. internet aware and know about the hotel booking sites, so no issues there.
Looking like latest batch is going into the shredder and my dream of a new trunk organizer will wait for another day.

Re: AARP, any real advantages?
AARP is just a shill for insurance.
They market nothing that you can't get cheaper somewhere else.
I am no fan of the AARP.
To get off of their mailing list(s), call member services, even if you
aren't a member. It takes a while, but it works. Or did for me.

Did the same, except I enclosed their trash in the return envelope... didn't want their garbage in my trash!Bronco wrote: ↑Sat Aug 08, 2020 4:28 pmI used to reply to them when they enclosed an envelope that did not need a stamp! I just simply ask anywhere if they offer a "senior discount". Almost always hear "yes". Or, sometimes I ask if they offer a "veteran's discount"... almost always hear "yes". I'll keep the dues in my pocket. Where I figure they'll do the most good for me!
No, just honest guys that don't worry about tellin' it like they see it.

Re: AARP, any real advantages?
It takes some talking to get the AARP discount everywhere using AMAC but we've been successful more often than not. Most desk people respond well if you are just friendly and polite, I usually ask, "is it better to be a veteran, old, or corporate, because I can do it all". I still have my GE insurance card. That usually gets a chuckle and they'll come up with the best they can. Last winter we called The Winter of Fun. Left home Feb 2, drove to northern Arizona, then southern, stayed a week there with friends. The Florida panhandle for a month, last stop Marco Island for a week with more friends. Got home mid March after 6300 miles on the road. Learned a ton about dealing with motels.
AARP? Never, never, never, not ever.

Read this, and just a wee bit between the lines.
Non-profit, yet makes commissions on insurance sales.
One of the founders of AARP also founded and was in charge
of Colonial Penn, which was sold to AARP members until
somebody smelt a rat.....
Say no more.....

Re: AARP, any real advantages?
AARP and ASPCA both contribute lopsidedly (that a word?) to liberal concerns.

Re: AARP, any real advantages?
I get equal or better discounts using my veteran's discount, or AAA discount, and don't have to help support an organization that's fighting against my gun rights.

Re: AARP, any real advantages?
They will never get me to join them after making that deal with the Democrat crooks. (Obamacare support). I love it when they send me envelopes that don't need stamps......I fill them up with junk mail and enclose a nice note....it costs them some change and makes me feel better.
Re: AARP, any real advantages?
Truth. Every time I have encountered an AARP discount, I have asked if membership in a particular political action group is required for a Senior Citizen's discount. The answer coast-to-coast has always been, "Oh, no, sir," and I get the discount. So sorry, AARP, but I ain't gonna buy the cow if the milk is free.
Re: AARP, any real advantages?
I've also found AARP to be a joke.

Re: AARP, any real advantages?
I'm not a democrat so all their junk gets ripped up and mailed back to them in the free prepaid envelope that they provide .

Hi Eddie!
Glad to see you made it!
