found some 44 special 240 grain winchester ammo
Its cowboy 240gn lead LFN, says 750fps on the box. Will try it out in a lever action. Any ideas on what velocity it might get out a 20" 44rem mag lever? Also the lead seems pretty soft cast, is there likely to be any expansion on stuff if the lever pushes the velocity up a little?

I shoot 7 grains of unique with a 240 grain at times in cowboy action. It cronos 840fps out of my vaqueros with 4 5/8 barrels and 1060fps out of a 19 inch uberti 1866. I think you could expect about the same from a 20 inch rifle. Can't tell you how it works on game, but works fine on steel targets.

Don't know how close it is in the real world but when I asked QuickLoad that question assuming I'd used TrailBoss to make those 750 fps Cowboy loads -- QL thought I'd gain 150 fps going from a 6" barrel to a 20" barrel.

Depends a lot on the powder .
I have a load of 5.5 grs of WST and a 300 gr. LFN gas check! I get about 750 fps in the 7 1/2" Redhawk and almost exactly the same in my Marlin 24" . I was really surprised with that. Now with a max of 2400 the difference is about 400 fps. 1350 -- 1750 fps.

that's really interesting. makes me wonder what you would get from a 16 inch barrel.Bronco wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 2:24 pm Depends a lot on the powder .

My .44 Spec and .45 LC lead bullet plinking loads all gain right around 200 fps when shot from a 20" barrel vs. 6" to 7.5" revolvers.

Thanks fellas, whats the report usually like for 44sp in a lever? I am still waiting for the rifle to turn up. If its not too much worse than 22mag it might become my go-to pest gun at yard ranges..
