Made in the USSR.
I popped into my local toyshop for .410 shells and came away with a Baikal IJ 58 MA 12 gauge sxs. The p/g stock needs a lot of TLC but mechanically it's sound.
I swapped my Cooey s/b and my Stevens s/b thus making room for a 20 gauge when I can find one I like.
The Baikal will be mainly for Fox and Roe deer, it should be ok as engraved on the receiver there's a Moose head on one side and a Elk head on the other...
It's choked mod and full, 28.5 inch barrels and weighs about six and three quarter pounds. I will pattern it before I do any restoration..

Bakail coach guns are pretty popular here among the cowboy action crowd! What size shot will you use for fox or deer?

Re: Made in the USSR.
Griff, I have BBs, AAA, Spec.SG and #3s I also have a few of 00 buckshot which I'm not very keen on. I've probably killed more Foxes with #4 shot than anything, it's just a matter of calling them in real close. I will pattern the Baikal with BBs as they will most likely be what I use on both as the other shot sizes are hard to get at the moment and I don't have many.
Baikal shotguns are popular over here as they have a "working man's price tag" I have had a few in the past and really like them.

Re: Made in the USSR.
I'll make exceptions for foreign guns that are of the quality, "meat & potatoes"......they run and run and don't break down, like a Ruger.....I've heard lots good about those Gamekeeper.......
Restoration?....looks mighty fine to me....sometimes just a 4-0 steel wool pad and some Tru-Oil will bring em up like new...
You guys have lots of brick and stone there for construction materials I noticed...around here it's, "build em for 20-50 years" and rip em down.-----006

Re: Made in the USSR.
looks nice ! i have several baikal over and under combo guns....put together really well, and very accurate. built like tanks. they have really improved the wood and the fitting. they seem to be a bargain to me. you can adjust the rifle point of impact a bit. the savage model OU combo guns are okay, but seldom can you find one where the rifl eand shotgun shoot anywhere near the same point of aim
good find, congratulations !

Hey that looks real nice GK! Congrats on a good score.
If it shoots as good as it looks, you'll be set!

Mechanically sound. Doesn't that mean that it clanks and clatters?

Re: Made in the USSR.
Guns are good and sturdy. Just like their women!
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

The USSR died in 1989. Is it an old one? HAs it got CCCP stamped on it?

Re: Made in the USSR.
No just made in USSR. It looks by the engraving to be one of the later models, probably around ,1985/86? The ij 58 was discontinued in 87.Carlsen Highway wrote: ↑Mon May 03, 2021 5:39 pm The USSR died in 1989. Is it an old one? HAs it got CCCP stamped on it?

Re: Made in the USSR.
I bought a 12ga Baikal SxS with chokes a long time ago. Shot it thousands of rounds at sporting clays. I can't take the recoil anymore even with clay sport loads....If I had to put 00 in it:

Re: Made in the USSR.
Picked up one of those long long ago. Impulse buy (like most). It is the short barreled version and came with 45-70 tubes. Thought it was mis-labeled but no, actual full length rifle tubes. little rear sight to screw into the top between the barrels also.
Cool, fun shotgun.
