POLITICS - Laugh of the Day - CA to Ban Helium Balloons

Post by deerwhacker444 »

.
Mylar balloons will become illegal in CA due to their dangerous nature.

KILLER BALLOONS

I'm just glad there will be a tax-payer funded agency out there protecting us from the dangers of helium filled balloons..!

Hopefully, the Terrorists won't get their hands on any..!

Sounds like someone IMPORTANT (like maybe a member of the legislature?) was inconvenienced by a power outage caused by a balloon. So now no more balloons. It's wonderful how legislatures represent the people so well.

I'm surprized that they have not enacted a law that requires an EPA study just to fanny burp in public

Well, I guess if I wanted to start an arguement I would start a post like this one.

Mylar baloons will often float off and when they deflate they may land on some power lines. Thus shorting them and causing power outages. Also some brush fires have been attributed to Aluminized Mylar baloons falling on power lines and sparks starting brush fires. And yes, this has happened. And you might not know but, California has had some VERY LARGE brush fires in the last few years with thousands of homes lost, billions of dollars lost, and lives lost.

Also when baloons float off over the ocean (Pacific that is) and deflate and land in the water, they look like jellyfish to some sea creatures, like the sea turtle. Well, jellyfish happen to be a tasty treat for sea turtles and they eat them. Most die after eating the plastic, maybe cause there ain't much nutritional value to plastic baloons and grocery bags and they clog the innards.

The original post may have been funny if I was ignorant of these facts.

that's strange, but when I'm on one of my climbing/hiking trips, I usually see a few of those deflated balloons. In areas too remote/rugged for regular trash and beer cans, you'll still see those balloons.

A slightly different perspective?

Personally, I'm all for this. Anyone who has spent as many years as I have repairing damage to OH power facilities caused by mylar baloons will certainly understand the reasoning behind this legislation. It IS NOT gun control, just a problem that needs to be addressed. If folks would properly dispose of metallic baloons we wouldn't have a problem, but it's too easy just to let 'em go.

Count me as in favor of eliminating unnecessary Mylar (and most other plastics and generally wasted materials). OTOH most "environmental" legislation is just like most "crime" legislation - symbolic, ineffective and politically or financially motivated for someone's gain behind the scene.

Sadly, our corrupt political system has fostered such cynicism that we do realistically mistrust and ridicule many of the laws they pass.

I'll admit, it IS hard to take much of what Kalifornia does seriously (along with Massachucetts, New York, etc.) simply due to their asinine gun laws and health care "systems." The good citizens of those states should tar and feather most of their politicians.
