Transfer pains and complaint department

Post by J Miller »

OK, this new incarnation remembers me, but each time I go off the forum and come back on it wants me to long on again. I click the box to automatically log me on, but it doesn't cooperate. I'm on Mozilla Firefox if that matters.

OK guys, here's what happened. The cookie didn't match up with the website. A small enough little glitch and easy to overlook. We've reset the cookie info so that NOW it should work. It was driving me nuts too - but I couldn't find the WHY. :D Now I have, reset it and it SHOULD work fine now. Dump your cookies and try it again, please advise if you experience any further such problems.

Thanks!

Guys,

We're still trying to iron the bugs out. This new version of the software enhances security and also facilitates moderation and admin duties. It's going to take us all a bit of time to figure things out, but don't sweat it - we'll soon be feeling at home here again in spite of the paint job and such. 8)

Anyway, there's a few issues to work out. So, PLEASE, if there's something that's not working right, post it on this thread. This will give us all a standard place to post our problems so that we can work out any issues that pop up. I'll be merging the threads on automatic logins with this one for a start.

Thanks!

OK. Try this. Hold down the control (ctrl) key and then push the F5 key at the top of your keyboard. This should force a refresh of your IE browser. If that doesn't work, try emptying your cookies and relogon...

I have too many things running with passwords and user names right now, I don't dare dump the cookies unless I can do them just for Leverguns. Is that doable?

Why are none of my posts posting?

I attempt to post and my responses are erased. I can't even use the "Back" button to try again.

I keep getting some kind of "Save Draft" BS.

OK. One of the problems we had was in the indexing of the site. There were some symbols and such that the system choked on. We're working at reindexing, but I don't know if we'll be successful or not. The board was slow as molasses and there were "too many connections" failures and such. SO FAR today it seems to be running smoother. You might try searching again, so far all the old stuff I've searched for has shown up.

I said something to that effect to a friend once, he replied, "just use the same name and password for everything, with maybe 2 or 3 variations for different levels of security". Boy did that simplify things!!!

So there were some posts with problems but I believe it was a quite limited number, if you count drop significantly it would had to have been counted wrong before because the total number of posts was very close.

As for the search....

I let the rebuild run for 12 hours and it appeared to still be running but I was counting indexes and didn't see the records increasing so I finally gave up.
I of course started this like a fool on my laptop so that was not such a great idea. If Paul wants I can delete the index and start this on another one of the dozen machines ;) sitting in my office at home and close my eyes on it for a few days. The rebuild is smart enough to do php refreshes during the rebuild so it won't time out. Looking at the admin panel it appears built but you really just can't tell...

Well actually I just did a SQL query on the new wordlist index it's significantly smaller then before however there is a wordlist and a wordmatch what the begezes they are used for exactly I don't know for sure. This software has a good support forum I'll poke around for answers on this in the next couple days. I have to admit I take of a lot of sites/forums for a groups but this one is big and gets a lot of posts. I'm used to having more categories for selected interest but whatever works.

By the way I appreciate all the thank you, I will help ANY gun (well pro gun) related site to the best of my ability. What I would ask in return is that if you are a collector and have a favorite make/model also consider looking up to see if there is a collectors organization and consider supporting them by joining a year and giving them a try. Many of these supply excellent journals that are limited only by what they can afford with membership dues and most are all volunteer organizations. Of course NRA is good but I'm just trying to help the little guys as well... I suspect their are a few that attended the NRA show hope you made it to collectors row, I'm not saying all of them, but many of them spend their own money and of course time to put on the display and encourage interest. I try to talk to anyone and everyone who shows and interest or has a question.
I hope (I don't think) I broke a rule by preaching but that's my one pitch....

Regards.

Ekk ooh, ouch. hum....

With the lose and recovery/rebuild of the forums I bet the ID's probably have changed.

Unfortunately I think that's going to be something we will have to live with.... I have no idea if you post another "hi" if it recreates that or not to the forum or maybe you have to change your option to no notification and then back on and then post. I'm just guessing here...

You can dump specific cookies in the browser options.

By the way for those who "leave" and come back, the cookie expiration is currently set to 1 hour...

That's strange, the Leverguns Texas Safari topic ID number is 3989 while this thread's number is 7542 I've NO idea how the two would get mixed up. We DID move the safari from "sticky" to "announcement" to clean up the look and enable folks to diferentiate between the "Forum Stuff" and the regular BS... :D

Ah, this may explain it:
If you want to view the newest post made since your last visit, click thefollowing link:viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3989&p=94643&e=94643

If you want to view the topic, click the following link:viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3989

If it is like th old forum (we'll just have to try), once you change the PW I'll have to re-activate you. Let me know when and I can look for the activation message and make it happen very quickly. Unfortunately, I've been busy with familial responsibilities this week and haven't been on much.

I ain't Hobie, but here's how it's set up. We're allowing user authentication now. So far no spammers (there WEREN'T - I'll check again today) Anyway, you go to your user control panel (look up above at the top left corner of the forum it says right there "user control panel") and poke around until you find where you can set a new password. The system should send you a note that you'll need to follow the instructions on to enable your account again.

I'm going to slip this one into the "Transfer Pains" thread...

Paul,

A couple questions about the Global Settings.

I noticed we now have to type in BRITISH ENGLISH. When did Bush abdicate the presidency and surrender us back to being a British colony?

And all the time zone settings are European. I'm not sure but I think we're in North America. Correct me if I'm wrong.

All this is tongue in cheek really, but is there a way to get this set for AMERICAN English and North American time zones?

Well, we've got no other language packs at this time. So, ol' bean, you must now affect a limey way of speaking. Keep a stiff uppah lip and all that.

As for time zones, the time listed is international standard time, based on the "Greenwich Meantime" IIRC GMT -5:00 is Eastern Standard Time and you can count down from there clear out to Alaska and Hiwaii... :) Once we get a US English language pack we'll set it up (hopefully they'll provide one) in honor of the founders of the site and forum who are all united statians. The time settings, well, it makes it easier for folks over seas (a healthy section of the fraternity) to have a global sense of the time on the posts and such. Central Daylight Time means nothing outside of the US, but GMT -6:00 (or -5:00 in DST) CAN make a bit of sense once you get the hang of the system.

Uh. Well, Joe? If you'd give a feller a chance to type it up...

And I'd appreciate it if you would be so kind as to point out any of the issues above that have been "ignored". We're doing our best to iron things out but we're human and something may have slipped through the cracks. It's not intentional, but all the moderators are volunteers, just doing our best to keep things running smoothly. A gentle reminder of specific issues is appreciated as we also have regular jobs we need to hold down to put food on the table and in some cases for even more important reasons. So if we're "ignoring" something it's not intentional. Either it's slipped through somehow or we're working on it as time allows.

And I should just let it go, but THIS is the thread we try to keep a tab on "things to do". It's a more appropriate thread for your question than the avatar thread was. THAT'S why it was moved, to make it easier to drop over to the appropriate thread to check on "need to do's" not out of some underhanded attempt to "ignore" your question.

Paul,

I apologize. I'm sorry for the attitude. I guess I woke up on the wrong side of the world today.

As for the language, could we at least try for Australian English? They got more style.
For the time, there's a clock in every room of this house and no two say the same time. So it don't matter really.

Well, gentlemen,

I am thankful for this forum. I appreciate it, and I have benefitted treamendously from the knowledge that you good people have shared with me. I like hanging out here, too. This has been a glitch-free changeover for me. Thank you, to all involved with this forum.

Now I gotta throw in this: I miss the most recent "old format":

Image

Image

It was very clean, and uncluttered. My favorite part of it, though, was the abillity to easily see a new posting, without straining to see any differences among the threads. It was not busy, and it was my favorite layout. I wanted a screenshot of the actual Leverguns page, but that rarely loads up anymore.
