38wcf 180 XTP
Hornady 180 gr. XTP and 8.5 gr. Unique in Starline brass capped with a Winchester LG pistol primer has proven to be a very accurate load in my 1873 Winchester’s . One of these in the noggin will send a wild hog to the smoke house .

Love the rifle, cartridge, load, and game pursued with it. Been raining here all day, so I been reading about the 73 and it's cartridges. Full circle when you spend your time and money, enjoy the prep & pursuit, then the best meat there is!

A good way to spend a rainy day , reading a good book . Not many rainy days down here in Tx. lately and we could use some for sure .
Re: 38wcf 180 XTP
I haven't tried the XTP's but the 180gr Gold Dot is nasty at 1400fps.
Re: 38wcf 180 XTP
It's strange. I've used the 44 XTP to hunt with in 44-40 a fair amount, but I've never ised them in 38 even though I much prefer it to 44.
I'm an enigma.

Re: 38wcf 180 XTP
I found these on sale for $28 bucks a hundred . So I got a few hundred and was happy to find out they shoot very good in the 38wcf. After initial load testing was complete , I really don't shoot these often , simply because getting more these day's is not a guarantee . For most of my shooting the 38wcf rifles are fed the 180 gr. Winchester cast bullet . I can always cast more of them . I never have used the Gold Dot bullet . Are you using it in the 38wcf ?

Nice bullets, they (XTP) work very well in the 44-40 as well.

Yep, I roll a cannelure in them with the Corbin tool and shoot them out of the Uberti 1873 rifle. They flatten out real nice.Dusty Texian wrote: ↑Wed Jul 27, 2022 1:58 pmI found these on sale for $28 bucks a hundred . Dusty, what velocity are you expecting from the 8.5 grains of Unique?
