Data transmission is the holy grail of our age. How many times have transmission rates doubled since the first viable modems became available to the public? In the blink of an eye we went from simple voice to where we are today. No reason to believe we won’t see continued leaps if communication technology.

I know a few youngsters who can’t fathom things like the, say, 300 bps modems that were once blazing fast. One day kids will look at transmission rates that truly are instantaneous over distances measured in light years and wonder how they can make it faster.

When we moved from a 52K modem to 250K "broad band" - wow! We've become spoiled in that we too often forget where we came from before we got where we are. When my wife and I first started our ministry in the Amazon Basin, I'd hand write the newsletter each month, take it to the post office and send it off. Our forwarding agent would receive it in a couple to several weeks, try to decipher it, type it up on his word processor, print it off on a 9 pin printer and send it off via bulk mail. Now? I type it off, hit "send" and it reaches our friends and supporters in a matter of seconds - if they're connected to the 'net. Like you said, youngsters today don't have a clue about "the good old days".

Anybody here remember when there was no internet? What's WorldWideWeb? What's email?

I remember when you could connect to a computer one on one. Then Bulletin Boards came out. Folks could reach more than one person at a time. This was all dial up pre internet.

Getting a modem installed and configured and software installed and configured was black magic. Com ports, serial ports, IRQ's and all the conflicts and frustration born of that.

Of course back then we built our own computers from the chasis up. Then getting it to boot up so we could install the software and find all of the problems and solving them. Faster chipset, RAM, or video card wanted, tear it all apart and start over. I think we spent more time assembling / disassembling and installing software than we did any serious work.

The last time I had anything to do with a Bulletin Board I had typed out the entire color call out for the Northrup P-61 cockpit, rec.scale.models. THAT seems like ages ago!
