OT - New old roller arrived today...

Post by Killer Kanuck »

Little different than the average rolling block. Just a little bit shorter. :D

It's a Remington model 1871 Army rolling block pistol - caliber is 50 Remington Army/Navy centerfire (basically a short 50/70). It's an obvious refinish, but quite well done. Might be a good candidate to send away and have the action case colored. The grips do appear to be original, as one of the numbers on the grip frame matches the number in the inletting of the grips. You can still see the inspector's cartouche on the left side of the grip (it's CRS). Bore is in quite nice shape for a 120+ year old pistol. Hopefully sometime over the summer I'll be able to pick up dies and some brass and get her making noise again.

It'll probably be a month or 2 before I get it out shooting, but I'll try to remember to take out the camera and get a short movie of it in action. I'm going to try a round ball over a load of FFFG to start and take it from there.

Excellent acquisition. I imagine the recoil is going to be impressive. Be sure to post a video of you firing the pistol, but the cameraman shouldn''t stand behind you so that the pistol smashes the camera as it cartwheels back after it tears itself out of your hands. :D

Actually Kirk, from what I've heard it's not too bad. I guess a better description of the caliber would be "a really short 50/70". :D

I'd be interested in seeing that cartridge. I'll bet it is close in size to the 56-50 Spencer....a cartridge I have a SERIOUS hankering to have installed into a sixgun by Hamilton Bowen...... 350gr bullet at about 750 fps.... Can you say ".50 Special"?

Don't have a roller rifle....... yet. Saw a 44-40 one listed on a gunshop's website up here the other day though - may give them a call to get a little more info.

Called about that 44-40 roller, but ended up buying a shotgun instead.
20g Miroku Field grade over/under with 28" barrels - hopefully will be death for grouse this Fall.

Can any of you roller guys tell me the good/bad/ugly about the Remington 1-1/2 frame? I know they were made for lighter calibers. The one I'm looking at has a 28" barrel in 44-40 - bore is fair, but the hammer spur appears to be broken off. Any idea on a fair price?
