Chronied 44 mag Hornady custom 200XTP
On the box it says 1500fps from a revolver which sounds about right as I ran it through my 20"Rossi 92 and velocities were 2016fps, 2004fps, 1998fps. Fast and consistent and muzzle energy averages at 1780ftlbs.
. One fella told me at that speed he had multiple broadside exits on small hogs as in jacket and core must have separated but more than 1 piece still made it through! Im after something to really anchor small pests on my side of the fence and this '444-lite' type load might be worth a try.

Re: Chronied 44 mag Hornady custom 200XTP
When I got my Henry 41 I worked up a couple different loads and tried the 210 XTPs, Sierra, Nosler. I was getting around 1800+ , then it dawned on me that Hornady made some XTP bullets for handgun bullets at rifle velocities. I called them and told the tech what I was doing . ' no the standard XTP is not for those speeds' so I called Sierra and same thing. Then I called Nosler and the tech asked me where I got a 41 rifle, told him it's a Henry, said he was calling his dealer, and he told me go right ahead and use their 41/210 jhp for game. Sadly I haven't...
For vermin I'd think the 200 XTP will do fine at your velocities!

I believe what you are referring to are the XTP Mag bullets. They make them in .452 and .500 for the 454 Casull, 460S&W and 500S&W. Not saying they don't exist, but I haven't seen XTP Mags for any other pistol bullet diameter. Would be nice if they offered them for 357, 41 and 44 for use in rifles where they are running a fair bit fasterGunnyMack wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 4:42 am When I got my Henry 41 I worked up a couple different loads and tried the 210 XTPs, Sierra, Nosler. Re: Chronied 44 mag Hornady custom 200XTP
Yes the XTP mag, I believe some of the 44 cal 300 gr were their mag designation.
It wasn't until after I spoke with all three manufacturers that I realized the muzzle velocity is not necessarily impact velocity so use the bullets for game and not worry much about it.

That's a valid point Sir .GunnyMack wrote: ↑Tue Jun 20, 2023 4:40 am Yes the XTP mag, I believe some of the 44 cal 300 gr were their mag designation.

Also worth remembering for perspective, many a critter have fallen to 180gr 50cal lead round balls and continue to do so. And many even smaller, 45s and 36s.

Anything through the pump house or air bags will do the job.

My wife (her first kill) and I have both killed white-tails with a .44 Mag Marlin Trapper with Hornady .200 Gr XTPs. They performed well on soft-skinned white tails with one-shot kills.

A couple of days ago I loaded up a box of cast 300 gr bullets for my shooting partner's .460 S&W. They should be traveling at about 2000 fps. He didn't believe they would hold together at that velocity but if you can shoot them out of a .45-70, I'm sure they'll work fine in his .460. Lyman mold 454629, a great bullet.

Wait a tick.... That's a 300gr .458 intended for 45-70?? The 460 Smith uses .452. (45 Colt diameter).Walt wrote: ↑Fri Jun 23, 2023 8:03 pm A couple of days ago I loaded up a box of cast 300 gr bullets for my shooting partner's .460 S&W. They should be traveling at about 2000 fps. Re: Chronied 44 mag Hornady custom 200XTP
No, my friend was afraid that cast bullets out of his .460 S&W would disintegrate before reaching the target due to the high velocity and rapid twist rate. He normally shoots XTP Max bullets and thought that if bullets with heavier jackets were recommended for his .460 then cast bullets would not hold together. I was merely using the cast .45-70 bullet velocities as a comparison. What I loaded for him were .452 in diameter.
Re: Chronied 44 mag Hornady custom 200XTP
I don't think that a Hard cast bullet of proper alloy will disintegrate. Is there a record of this happening? Thousands of bullets have been shot into wet newsprint, if they were disintegrating there should be info . . .Walt wrote: ↑Sat Jun 24, 2023 5:51 am No, my friend was afraid that cast bullets out of his .460 S&W would disintegrate before reaching the target due to the high velocity and rapid twist rate. Re: Chronied 44 mag Hornady custom 200XTP
I've seen light thin jacketed bullets melt in flight, 303 necked down to 22 going over 4000fps. You could actually see the vapor trail going down range . these were 40 gr varmint bullets.
Since a cast bullet is homogeneous it can't really come apart due to spin. Only thing to worry about would be stripping the rifling. Throw a gas check in and not a worry !

Ah, good deal. I misinterpreted your post. I'm not big into cast but I do know that hard cast can be pushed hard. For the fancy caster there are nose molds that you can cast ahead of time then insert them in to regular mold and have a soft nose hard shank cast bullet. I have the gear but have never poured some and tested them. Veral Smith says they work good if you want to go that route! I personally have been quite satisfied with the LFN 300gr gc LBT bullets to not have experimented any further. Oh yeah, I am talking about 44 cal.

Re: Chronied 44 mag Hornady custom 200XTP
I may be wrong but I think initially they did make XTP mag bullets in .429 and .358. I guess market demand changed that. I use them in my 300 gr .45 Colt +P+ loads and they work great.RIDERED350r wrote: ↑Mon Jun 19, 2023 7:29 pm I believe what you are referring to are the XTP Mag bullets. I have shot several deer and a few pigs with the 210 grain XTP shot out of my Marlin 94FG and all worked well , never recovered a bullet as all passed through.GunnyMack wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 4:42 am When I got my Henry 41 I worked up a couple different loads and tried the 210 XTPs, Sierra, Nosler. Re: Chronied 44 mag Hornady custom 200XTP
I shot a couple deer, one a big 8 pointer a shade under 200 pounds, with the 200gr XTP loaded in a 44-40. It chrono'd right at 1500fps at the muzzle. Both deer folded like a cheap suit with full pass through. The buck was shot at about 70 yards. The other deer, a doe, was basically at arms length.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.
Re: Chronied 44 mag Hornady custom 200XTP
I remember reading Ross Seyfried discussing making bullets that had a Soft Nose for expansion and a Harder Base .Bronco wrote: ↑Sat Jun 24, 2023 11:42 am For the fancy caster there are nose molds that you can cast ahead of time then insert them in to regular mold and have a soft nose hard shank cast bullet. If I remember correctly He said that the worked much like a Nosler Partition.
Speaking of Veral Smith of LBT ,although I never Had one ,I believe at one time that he did make a tool or bullet mold for making 2 part bullets.
Re: Chronied 44 mag Hornady custom 200XTP
My shooting partner and I went shooting this morning, taking among other guns his .460 S&W for which I had loaded 300 gr bullets from Lyman mold #454629. BTW this is a proprietary mold sold only through Freedom Arms and it's a great bullet design. On several occasions his was able to hit an 9" gong 3 out of 5 shots offhand at 75 yards at a velocity of around 2000 fps. I think he likes it.
