.45 Therapy
Sometimes you just need to get back to real-sized stuff to connect or re-connect. Lately I had been playing with sub-caliber stuff. .35 caliber sixguns, .35 caliber autoloaders, .36 caliber percussion guns. All real nice. All good shooters. All of 'em easy on lead and powder. But I began hankering for something normal ... not the little bitty stuff. So I went and dug out my .45 Colt Ruger that John Linebaugh built for me so many years ago.
Do you know how good it feels to get hold of a cartridge that is larger around than a pencil? And those huge holes in the cylinder! They are easy to get a big cartridge to slide into. Ah ... so slick. And easy to shoot. I had 3 different loads. One with the Keith SWC 454424 over 15 gr. of 2400 ... one with the old 454190 round nose over 7.0 gr. of Green Dot ... and one with J.D. Jones SSK 270 gr. flat nose over 6.2 gr. of Green Dot. They all shot well. I got the best group of the day with the old 454190 bullet. That could most likely be because I had more of them than the other combined and spent quite a bit of time shooting them from various positions.
It was a good day. I burned a lot of powder but the best part was, I re-connected with an old friend. My old Linebaugh Ruger. It was the best therapy!
It is a Ruger Blackhawk originally made in 1971. My Uncle gave it to me as a wedding present in 1972. I shot it until I wore it out, then sent it to John Linebaugh and had him rebarrel it with an 8" barrel and make a new cylinder with tight chambers. I had the gun black chromed. My old friend Sam Bass made the elephant ivory grips and my wife scrimshawed them. This was my main hunting and carry gun in the 1970's through the 1990's. I rarely shot anything else. I took a lot of game with it and did a whale of a lot of long range handgunning with it. But I put it away about 20 years ago and have rarely shot it since. Today I needed .45 Therapy! So out it came and off to the Range!Do you know how good it feels to get hold of a cartridge that is larger around than a pencil? And those huge holes in the cylinder!
