Auction Results--1871 Colt Open Top
Shootists,
I just came back from an auction and snagged a few neat items. One was a heavy wooden box about 24" x 18" marked "Dupont Tetryl" "High Explosives" "100 lbs" and the date 3-11-44. I don't know what that stuff was. I'll make a great box for kindling wood.
Along with an old 1920's safe deposit box, a mess of assorted loose ammo, I also came home with this Colt Open Top .22 Short and Long WITH THE ORIGINAL BOX AND CLEANING ROD! The box is worth more than the gun. These Colts were made from 1871 to about 1879. As mine has a very low serial number, I'm guessing its a first year production gun. The gun has 100% mechanics and has not been shot much. The nickle plating around the cylinder and barrel has pretty much flaked off but the rest of the gun is very nice. I even shot it already.--------The search continues and the "gun itch" never gets scratched---dreaded disease
The price sure was right--$250 ---------------------Sixgun

Nice old Colt! I'm jealous since I never find deals like that.

Sixgun -
I have one as well, and have shot it too! I don't have the box though - and you are correct, it is worth more than the gun! Neat little revolvers, aren't they? Congrats!!!

Very cool Sixgun! Seems like a super price, and especially so with the box! I've got an old Marlin pistol, but it's in .32RF, so I've never fired it in 20 years of owning it.-Vall

If you PM me your address, I'll send you a handful of newly manufactured 32 RF's. Neat little cartridge and it does bark a bit out of the little guns.-------------Sixgun

Thanks Sixgun! I do have some newer Cannuck brand .32 rimfires, I've just been hesitant to shoot the old Marlin, as the hinge joints have been noted as a weak point.-Vall

Wow- nice find and at a great price! The Colts should be worth quite a bit more than the S&W's I'd think - just because of the difference in production quantities...
Thanks for posting the pics everybody!
