OT - screw sizes...

Post by O.S.O.K. »

Guys, I need a screw to attach a tang sight that I got for my Remington 81. I don't know the size but its larger than 8:40 - fairly stout screw for a gun screw... Brownells has a kit of various screws from size "0" to "12" - wire guage? What the heck is that? how large is a number 12? I am getting frustrated.

Any help with this appreiciated.

Here's the link to the item. http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ ... =1773#1773

Could be a #10 X32 That seems to be a standard size for tang sight screws.
Without a thread pitch gauge and caliper it is hard to tell what you have for sure. Wish I could be of more help.
This may help.

The first few listed are wire sizes.

Thanks - but I'm still not sure - I don't have a thread guage either. If all else fails, I can drill the sight's mounting hole to thin the bottom - so the existing plug screw will work. Just don't want to do that!

If you have a plug screw, No Problem!! Take it to the local hardware store and find a nut that it fits into and that will tell you what size it is. Dont mess up your sight base. Do it right! :D

OSOK,
Its a 10-40 that you need. If your a guncrank and play with the old iron sights, get a copy of "Old Gunsights". It has all the information in it you will ever need. ---------------Sixgun

I learned this just this week- diameter of the screw is 0.060" + 0.013" x screw size. That makes a #10 screw 0.190" diameter.

Guys - where does one get 10-40 screws? The largest listed in any of the sets that I'm looking at is 10-32...

Do I need to go to a hardware type supplier? I'm only looking in Midway, Brownells, etc. -

OSOK,
Wow, Thats what I was going to suggest. Is what I have done with oddball screw sizes is to buy the tap and die which Brownells always seems to have. Then I can make 'em myself out of existing screws and a drill press to turn 'em down.---------Sixgun

Brownells should have 10-40 screws, but only a really big hardware store would carry odd sizes and threads.

I just need to call Brownells - they may have it and I just can't locate it on their web site - their search bot is very poor IMHO.

All of the screw assortments shown stop at 10-32... weird.

Call Marbles, They sell screw sets to fit most rifles to mount their tang sights. Many are listed in Midway USA`s online catalog but the thread size is not given. Marbles could help I am sure. :D

Thanks guys - I've got an email into Brownells's Tech service. We'll see what they come up with.
