When Hunting with the 336
Do you put the hammer on half cock, or let it all the way back down?

I always hunt with the hammer on half-cock and a round in the
chamber. The late Jeff Cooper advises carrying it with no round in
the chamber and racking the lever as the gun is brought to the
shoulder. I wrote him a letter about this, pointing out that when
hunting from a stand the motion and noise might spook the
game. He grudgingly admitted that carrying the weapon at
half-cock works, too! I believe he also mentioned in a later
article that he was maybe not quite as familiar with the problems
of Eastern whitetail hunters as he might be.
So, ya pays your money and takes your chances. I prefer the
half-cock method in dense woods for the aforementioned reason.

Carried in the truck, on the ATV or perhaps behind the kitchen door with hammer down on an empty chamber. Carried still hunting round in the chambe and hammer on half-cock.

Thanks, that's what I thought.

When hunting I carry any levergun with a half cock action with a round in the chamber and the hammer on half cock.
If I'm climbing over fences, or very rough terrain I'll clear the chamber and lower the hammer all the way down.

I'm not clear about the original question so I'll add its not safe to set the hammer down on a loaded chamber in a Marlin action.
