OT - do you have to wear orange in your state for deer hunt
I noticed that some were surprised by the amount of orange people were wearing in WCF 3030 deer camp pics. So I was wondering what the laws are in your state. First of all for safty in a large party hunting thick brush it is a must. When I was 15 a neighbors hunting party shot one of there own behind our house. A man ran into our house to use the phone . I ran out to the edge of the woods where the wounded man lay. He was blue when I got there and was bleeding out his chest. He survived and went back to hunting . But the following year everyone in that party wore orange head to toe and still do till this day. So in a big group wear some orange.
Anyway in Wisconsin you have to have 50% of your body orange and a orange hat. I use orange camo and the deer walk right by and don't notice me. So I know they don't see that color spectrum. I do know they see blue wavelength. If fact the DNR took and fined some Amish last year for not using orange even on private land.

Re: OT - do you have to wear orange in your state for deer hunt
I would think you should wear Int'l orange even if your DNR doesn't require it. The deer don't care one way or another & you'll be less likely to be mistaken for one. I ain't ever seen one wearing it, so it's a safe bet if you got it on, you ain't a deer. Course, that won't stop you from bein shot on purpose, like those guys shot by that Chinaman up there several years ago. jd45

I hunt in West Virginia, yes they have a 400 sq inches of Blaze orange during firearms season. Unless you are doing farm work and shoot a deer of oppourtunity.
Re: OT - do you have to wear orange in your state for deer hunt
Nope, not in NY, though a LOT of people do.

The state I hunt in recommends it. I wear a blaze orange vest and hat or if warm a blaze orange hooded sweatshirt. I've had deer plenty close to me.

Re: OT - do you have to wear orange in your state for deer hunt
Rant on.
Here in Ohio a you must wear a jacket or vest or coveralls that are solid hunter orange or camouflage hunter orange. Over the years our DNR has enjoyed changing these laws many times. There was a time where a hunter orange hat was good enough. No. No. No. Not any more. You must get new hunting cloths. This year our DNR in it's constant need to adjust and over define every little thing a man can possibly do in the field has decided that the hunting vest that I have worn and loved for years is all of a sudden unsafe and will not be allowed by law. I needed to buy a new vest.
"But why, you ask? What is wrong with it?"
Well , you see, it has some brown cloth that is not orange.
"But camouflage hunter orange has cloth that is not hunter orange."
Well, yea but the DNR thought............ uh..........well..........I don't know what they were thinking.
Rant off.

Indiana:

Minimal logos or patches are allowed. Camouflage-patterned fluorescent orange garments do not satisfy the requirement. You must wear fluorescent orange if you are hunting:
· Deer* · Rabbit
· Pheasant · Ruffed grouse
· Quail · Woodcock
· Squirrel (Nov. 7, 2008 - Jan. 31, 2009)
* See deer hu n t ing fluorescent orange
requirements on page 6.
Fluorescent Orange (Hunter Orange) Requirements for Deer Hunting You must meet fluorescent orange requirements while hunting for deer during firearms and muzzleloader seasons (Nov. 15 - Nov. 30 and Dec. 6 - Dec. 21). If you are using archery equipment, you must meet fluorescent orange requirements while hunting during these dates. Florescent orange must be worn during youth deer hunting season (Sept. 27 and 28).

Re: OT - do you have to wear orange in your state for deer hunt
Yes.
Safety is in the hands of other hunters. I know of one hunter, dressed head to boot tops in blaze orange, who was shot in the ankle when his pants cuff rode up a bit exposing white sock. The shooter claimed he thought it was a white tail... This as he crawled under a fence with 4 other hunters standing around him, talking, and one was holding the barbed wire off his back, and yes, in the open!

400 sq. inch vest or coat plus hat here in Arkansaw. It can be orange camo. It has really cut down on the accidental shootings here, but there are still some plain stupid ones every year.

not required but I do anyway. This year I got within 6 feet of a doe, and there was a guy between me and her, HE was wearing camo.

Re: OT - do you have to wear orange in your state for deer hunt
Here in Hawaii on public lands open to firearms including black-powder orange is required (144 square inches of orange on each side of body, orange hat not required, camo-orange not allowed). On public lands open for archery-only orange is not required. On private lands is it up to the discretion of the land owner.

Re: OT - do you have to wear orange in your state for deer hunt
400 Sq inches on public land.
For some perverse reason, I keep getting reminded of an old 'Warner Brothers' cartoon from the 1940's that was called something along the lines of "Today's Modern Sportsman". The main character was a guy named "Ed" and he was a comedic equivalent to Disney's "Goofy". Anyway, at the end of the cartoon, Ed takes his mother-in-law hunting and the narrator says "Ed has a special hunting outfit designed specifically for his mother-in-law."
It is a fawn-brown leather coat with a hood, with a pair of antlers sticking out the top...
At the close of the cartoon, Ed is shown driving through the old-style check-in line at the DNR...with his mother-in-law strapped to the ender of his car.
(My wife is watching me type this right now with a slightly amused but mostly ticked-off look on her face. For the record, I love my mother-in-law...really. )

I'm one of those who do. It may be just a camo blaze hat (at times--at other times, I add a blaze vest), but I'm on private land up in the Adirondacks, so we know full well who is up on the land.gcs wrote:Nope, not in NY, though a LOT of people do.

In general not in Alberta, Canada. However if you're doing Camp Wainwright, hunter orange is manditory.

Re: OT - do you have to wear orange in your state for deer hunt
In Massachusetts you must wear 500 square inches of Hunter Orange on the head , chest and back during the shotgun and muzzleloader season for deer. It is a good idea since before we had a hunter orange law there were several accidental shootings each season. Now it is practically non existant. Most accidents now are during wild turkey season.

Re: OT - do you have to wear orange in your state for deer hunt
As "Jeremy" said, CA does not require orange; HOWEVER, with some of the "Yahoos" we got in the woods and in the fields here, it is a wise move to wear at least an orange hat.

Re: OT - do you have to wear orange in your state for deer hunt
Rhode Island: Yes, 200 square" during small game and blackpowder seasons, then 500 sq" (minimum hat and vest) during shotgun season by ALL hunters, no orange camo at all, must be solid. Users of state land (walkers, joggers, bikers, etc) will wear a minimum of 200 sq" from the 3rd Saturday in October to the 31st of January, no exclusions.
