45-70, 300gr and H4198

Ok, today is the day. I'm going to load a range of rounds(5 each for testing) from 51gr of H4198 to 55gr with 300gr Hornady JHP's in Winchester brass and Winchester primers. Anybody else using a similar setup in their Marlin 1895's?

47.5 gr of 4198, 1995 fps with a Remington 300 in a 22" 1895SS with the Ballard style rifling. ES was 98 fps. 51 grains should produce something in the 2100 fps range in my rifle. Maybe a little more.

Your setup almost duplicates mine. A friend turned me onto this load. The neat part is you can substitute different 300 gr. bullets without pressure issues. I use the hornadys for practice, then switch to 300 gr. nosler partitionsfor hunting.

Avg vel.[in my 18 1/2" GG barrel] 1950 fps.

I used this load in Africa to take 7 head of plains game, this summer. Here's a coupla pics.

I might add that my above described load yeilded 2075 fps in an 1895 Cowboy 26".

Thanks again Old Savage. Sounds like I can achieve the 2000 to 2200 fps I'm looking for. I've been hesitant about loading the 55 grainers.

Maddog, Excellent pic's. I was there in Sept of '06. I've been building my own longbows for several years now and that is what I hunted with in the Limpopo Prov. of RSA. Took a Kudu, Warthog and Blesbok. What an excellent adventure. Congrats on your success!!

I haven't hunted with anything but archery equip since 1992. Always had a fascination with the old lever guns, so decided this year to get the 1895CB. Think I'll tryout Coyotes with it. They are getting to be a real neuacence here in NC.

pebow, tested five different loads between the 22" SS and 26" Cowboy low velocity of the string was always higher with the 26" 30 to 92 fps but the high wasn't always higher but could be by 100 fps. You just have to see by the individual load.
