I wouldn't have a lever, but I'd be ok.
Re: Could you get by?
The only one given to me was my father's 1956 pre-Mod 10 38spcl. It shoots as good as any other revolver or pistol so I suppose I could make do if I were really determined .
But, I'm not that determined.

Yes, My father did... He got more game with a bolt action 16 gauge and 22LR semi-auto then I will ever take with my armory...

Re: Could you get by?
I've only been given 4 guns....one is a 12ga Central Arms single shot, one is a .22 cal single shot that is downright dangerous, one is a Janssen and Sons SxS exposed hammer 12 ga that is too loose to shoot, and the last is a Winchester 12 ga auto. I could live off the 12 ga auto, or the 12 Ga single shot, but pickins would be slim.....and I'd get darned tired of rabbit and quail.

Re: Could you get by?
I give more than I get!
I have given 3 guns and received only one.
Could I live off a 7.62x54R semiauto?
Possibly but it's not ammo you find everywhere.
I have given a 30-30 Winchester, 10/22 and ruger semiauto 22.
With those I could get by easily.

Re: Could you get by?
I did for about the first 12 years of my shooting life which also includes 7 years of my married life. It was my old 1939 Winchester M64 in 25-35. Got 'er on my 14th birthday and served me very well with both jacketed bullets (when I could afford them) and mostly bullets I cast.
So yes, I could get by with it. Again.

Re: Could you get by?
My first gun was a Marlin 60 that Dad bought me at an estate sale. The only other gun I have that was given to me is a badly rusted 1850's era percussion double shotgun that I don't dare fire. So no, I couldn't get by on those two.

I wouldn't like it, but I'd have a 69 Browning 22 Auto and an old Whinny 72 .22 and a .444 and a single shot 12ga and HiStandard 9shot revolver.....

Re: Could you get by?
The short answer is: no. Long answer: continued below.
I was given a youth model 20ga topper, that has gone to my brothers, then their kids and is now back with me. It will be going to a grandnephew in the next few years as a starter shotgun. The stock is much too short for me to shoot well. It was a gift that has been given to others and will continue as such.
Christmas at age 13, I was given small box with a bottle of cold blue, a stock refinishing kit, and directions to my other present. It was a no name(at least I've forgotten what it was since) tube fed bolt action 22. We were not well off and the 22 needed the other two gifts badly as it was not pretty. I loved it and spent a lot of time trying to get it to function correctly. It jammed a lot but it taught me how to shoot. I traded it after a couple years(via Mom and money from stripping bluegrass) on a new marlin 60 that my youngest brother now has.
I was given Mosin Nagant 7.62 by my grandfather that was nearly impossible to get ammo for in the 70s. The sights were off by 4" left @ 50 yards. My brother "improved" it by removing the rear sight base, creating grooves for and installing a 22 scope out of the solder that held it on. That plan didn't work all that well. He lost the base, of course. I still have it but I haven't shot it in decades.
There's been a couple of cap and ball revolvers given to me, one of which is shootable(44 remington copy), the other(FIE 1851 navy .36) I'm still looking for parts for(grip frame screws & hand spring).
The most recent gift was a Beaumont model 1871/88 as a box of parts. It was missing parts. I have since gotten it shootable($120 in parts over 3 years). Ammo is expensive ($90 a box of 20) and I don't really want to spend another $300 on getting set up to reload for it so I haven't fired it. I'll probably sell it.

Re: Could you get by?
There was nothing to pass down to me. My son has only asked that I pass 3 down to him. My first 22, his first 22, and a Henry Big Boy he won at a Friends of the NRA dinner.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
Re: Could you get by?
As my only rifle for quite a few years, I shot everything! No elk though, I wasn't interested in hunting elk at that time. I killed quite a few deer (ok, a LOT of deer ), a couple bear, , coyotes and cats, LOTS of grouse, rabbits and a few edited things. I used a 120gr cast bullet with a maximum charge of 3031 for all my other hunting.Old Savage wrote:44LVR - what all did you shoot with that 25-35?

Yes. The one and only gun ever given to me was a pre-64 Winchester Model 94 .30-30 given to me by my Dad on the way to a deer hunt in North Georgia in 1956. I've still got that gun and it would do nicely if it were the only gun I had.

Most likely. I haven't been given any guns yet, but the stevens/savage 94 and the 9422(crossing the fingers) could be considered mine. Between those two I could slay anything that walks/flys around Missouri.

Re: Could you get by?
Actually, a double rifle is ... a double rifle. Drilling comes from the German Drei, meaning 3. (A 4 barreled gun is a Vierling.) My drilling, a guild gun made in Austria in about 1900-1910 and marked by WM Richard is a 16ga side by side hammer double over a 9.3x72R(rimmed) rifle barrel that is the rough equivelent to the old BP .38-55. I shoot a 190gr lead bullet over 18gr 2400 (IIRC - notes not handy) for about 1500fps or so.Travis Morgan wrote:So, what caliber is 16X16X a bunch of other numbers? Very fine looking gun. It's EXTREMELY accurate. Other than concealed carry, I probably could get by with

light for moose. Still, if ya got close enough and aimed for the brain.......

Hey! I got to learn somethin' today!Old Ironsights wrote:Actually, a double rifle is ... a double rifle. Who's the maker.
Note for the uninitiated: A "Drilling" is the proper term for a double rifle. The more you know.......

Re: Could you get by?
I guess I could a model 68 single shot 22 from my dad and a Mossberg 12 bolt with a polychoke given to me by a friend. No levers but I could survive quite well I think.
