OT Crab feed at my house!

Post by pharmseller »

I took my SIL crabbing Saturday 1-24 to try out a new davit. We crabbed hard for about 4 hours and came home with a mixed bag of Dungies and red rock. Some of the red rock were as big as keeper Dungies! We high graded on the reds, keeping only those that were big enough to mess with.

Here I am doing all the work:

Those things are huge! :D My son (Sixgun Jr.) caught some of them one time but his were real tiny, and they itched real bad.  ----------------------Sixgun

On a side note, (nothing personal now :D )I only live about 50 miles from some of the best crabbing on the east Coast and for some reason, I have never been able to stomach crabs. They are plentiful around here, but I guess its the thought of what they eat. I remember as a small child, the old timers were talking about this dead guy that was pulled out of the ocean and his body was covered with crabs----eeeeeyuuuukkkkk.

That ain't kosher!!!!

Looks interesting anyway. :) Never have learned how to fix them and haven't eaten any in - oh, 35 years or so? 'Round here all we see are freshwater crabs about the size of a small tarantula. Of course, our small tarantulas are not that small...

Good eating.
When I was a kid in england we used to pull in tons of crab as a by-catch when fishing for cod off the south coast. We would shoot the trammels in the early evening, and pull them in the next morning. The guys used to hate cleaning them from the nets. There were so many of them, we used to return to the beach, and spend hours removing them. We would snap of the claws, and smash the crabs into pieces on the gunnel with a wooden mallet. No one wanted crab. I would take a few and boil them up. Real tasty.
Crabs were 4 to 6'' across the shell. We called them dungeness crabs, named after dungeness, in kent I think They were grey-brown in color, and had bigger claws than the ones in your picture.

These boats are 22-24' clinker built with lister twin diesels. Sturdy potting, and netting boats. the fishing industry is in great decline there now.

We used to buy fresh dungeness crabs from the dock in Morro Bay, Calif and San Francisco. Now all I get is frozen, still better then the blue crabs around here. Nice job, hope you enjoyed!

I will have to say that after having left Maryland in 1973 the only thing I miss from there are the crab cakes.

Being that I'm from the East coast, I have to question whether those are crabs or Sherman tanks. They certainly look a whole lot easier to pick than the Blue Crabs we're used to over here.

No Cooked Fish for this guy either. (oddly enough I'm good with sashimi... I just can't have it cooked or smoked in any way...)

WOW, I LOVE CRAB even more than lobster, texture and flavor wise. Which do you prefer the Dungies or Reds? We catch several varieties here but the Mangrove Crab is the largest, and my favorite. Here's one I caught in my backyard a couple months back.

One of my absolutely favorite meals is fresh harvest Dungeness crabs boiled with fresh clams and mussels and corn on the cob. Add a warm loaf of french bread and a icy cold bottle of Calif Chardonay, a little mustard sauce and lemon and I and my wife are in HEAVEN. YUMM YUMMM!

Unfortunately the last time we had that feast was more than 15 years ago. So there is still something I miss about Hotel California. Along with the Pacific Ocean.
