Photos of newer '86 done by Mike Hunter

Post by danthegunman »

A couple of days ago Mike Hunter contacted me and asked if I would be interested in converting new Browning or Japanese Winchesters '86s to look like old ones since he is not offering that service any longer.

Mike suggested that I ask some of ya'll to supply me with some photos of new '86s that have been converted to look like old ones since he has done this to many of yours.

So what I am looking for is photos of '86s but more importantly pics of the tang area that the saftey's have been welded up to look like old ones, and the -1886- markings on the tang.

Thank you in advance.

I know of at least one that was done and had pics posted on the old site. I just can't remember who it was, but.... it was done very well.

I also have a Japanese Winchester that could use the treatment.
Could you also fix the rebounding hammer defect?[/img]

SteveB has just such pics on his blog:
http://reloadingandlevergunning.blogspot.com/

Look down the left side where it has the articles listed: Winchester/Miroku '86 Mods/Custom Work/Continued. Farther down is the first part.

SteveB had an Extra Light so converted. He may still have the photos. Contact him through e-mail or PM and I'm sure he'll share those.

Hobie

I would be one willing to have this conversion applied to my Winnie '86 in 45-90. Remove the safety, weld it up and re-stamp the tang.

Even though the Marble's tang site covers the safety so one can't see it, it's still there. Plus, the rebounding hammer. I'd like that removed and the good ole half cock safety feature put in it's place (R&R the hammer w/Browning and the required ancillary components).

Mike did one of my guns and added a FM, too. I have posted pics several times, so guess it can be done again.

Tang with saferty slot welded and remarked same as early 20 C 1886.
Image

Japan markings spun away and barrel remarked like original lightweight '86.
Image

Barrel marked "nickel steel" as early 1900s rifles were.
Image

New full magazine added. Mag threads out as original "A" serial number suffix.
Image

My gun sits all forlorn awaiting a PG buttstock that is proving to be a very difficult score.

So Dan, are you going to start doing this work? Are you able to roll print the new "old" markings?

Dan that's great to hear! Looking forward to hearing your progress in this. If I end up keeping my 86 TD then it will probably be heading your way. Just can't get use to that tang saftey.
