I have read other treatises on barrel making in the target shooting literature - one had six different makers describe the processes they used. It seems good barrels can be made by a variety of processes as long as it is done right and carefully.

Nice article! Very informative too.
Most of the old great barrel makers used cut rifling, and their cuts were much thinner than what is mentioned in this article. Harry Pope used cigarette papers to shim his cutters and hand pulled the cutter through the bore. He said he watched the cutting fluid for a color change, which let him know it was time to pull the cutter and add another paper shim underneath.
Pope also said he never lapped his bores as he thought this method left the rifling so smooth that lapping would have no positive effect.-Vall

Thanks, Hobie, for posting this article. The author is very articulate and has a knack for explaining his topic. I have always wanted to spend a few days watching the barrel making process, as well as viewing the machining of actions and parts. I never had the oportunity to learn tool and die work, but it has always interested me. Tom

Another really good article on rifle making and barrel making can be found in one of the Foxfire books. Foxfire#5 has a chapter on making "hog rifles" as the old timers called them. I've read my copy over and over till the pages and the cover are black and grubby looking.

Hey! learn somethin' new everyday. I have always wondered why some guys complain that their guns that are new in the box shoot 5" groups. I always thought they just did not know what they were doing and in some cases, I'm sure I was right.

Now, I know why, especially with button rifled barrels as the rifling may not be concentric to the bore. See how smart I am!----------Thanks---Sixgun

Concentric isn't really a problem. In fact years ago when Douglas was making barrels for muzzleloaders they used to put the "Douglas barrel works" stamp on the flat that had the run out so when you breached the barrel you would have it centered on either the top or the bottom.
