Moose Hunt Applications - levergun big game hunting

Post by 86er »

Perfect animal to pursue with your 45-70, 358, 375, 444, 348, bottleneck cartridge levergun chambering, 50 AK, - what else is ideal for moose?

New Brunswick - Call 1-800-296-2666 for the lottery $39 and 1:18 odds.

Maine - www.maine.gov - for the lottery $10 one chance, $25 3 chances, $55 10 chances in blocks.

If you draw, I will gladly arrange your levergun hunt in either area.

Good Luck!

You forgot the 356 win. Many a moose has fallen to a 308 in my area so the 307 should also be there. the 30/30 has also taken its share but not often thought of as a moose rifle. It all depends on the nut behind the butt plate.

The .303 british has been used as a moose rifle for years. I honestly think I would be very comfortable with my Marlin 30-30 or a .35 rem.

Most of the moose that I've shot fell to my Ruger 1B in .270 Weatherby with 150 grain Partitions. Ditto for the only one that dropped instantly on the spot (not a head or spine shot, either.) The one that went the furthest (75 yards) was hit in the chest from a 300 grain Partition out of a Ruger 1H .375 H&H, for what it's worth. I've shot one with a 30-30 (Savage 24) at 50 yards; seemed to kill him OK. Most big game cartridges are fine, if used within a reasonable range. You need good penetration, though, so a premium bullet is a good idea. Moose are not hard to kill, but they can go aways if they get excited before you pull the trigger. Best not to let them know you're around.

Hmmmm.... I dunno about ideal, but if I ever get picked for a moose tag here in Maine,
my primary weapon is gonna be a Ruger Super Blackhawk in 41 Magnum, and my back up is
gonna be my 336 in 35 Remington.

Some folks might say that both are too light for moose. I don't think 30/30 is too light if
you get close, and a lot of moose have fallen to that caliber. The 35 ought to do just fine
at ranges of less than 100 yards, and with some of those hard-cast
bullets that Paco has written about, I think I'll do all right with the 41 Mag, too.

I've always wanted to go moose hunting with a handgun...........

I am thinking my perfect rifle for an Eastern Moose hunt in Maine or New Brunswick would be either my NEW Marlin 338MXLR or my Winchester Model 70 "Black Shadow" in 325 WSM .

I am going to go for it...I have been applying for NH, and Vermont for the last few years, maybe I'll have better luck with Maine.

For me, it would have to be my .38-55. My handloads with 255 grain Barnes Originals perform great...and the Buffalo Bores are awesome. I have been doing penetration tests and I would find it hard to believe that I couldn't put a big hole through both shoulders of a bull moose. What do you guys think?

I've had my .356 for about 17 years but have only taken on two moose hunts. (200gr. PP's in the tube). I was perfectly comfortable with this gun and bullet. If it will shoot through Canadian whitetails at 100 yards it'll no doubt be just fine for the ranges we shoot most moose at here in Manitoba. Have shot 6 with a 30.06 and they are actually quite easy to kill if they are hit in the ribs. They will usually just stand there until they fall over. I figured that I would have plenty of time to put two or three into his chest if it was neccessary and I aint't no speedy shot. Too bad the opportunity never came to try it out!

I was talking to a woman at the local range last fall and she took a VT moose with her beat up old 30-30. It's amazing what it can do if you know how to shoot.
