new to the forum

Post by mrwiggins »

hello everyone,
i'm new to the forum, from Louisiana about 45 min outside of new orleans, and i've always loved lever guns. i currenty own a blr 30.06 that i hunt whitetail deer with, thinking about picking up a 22lr of some kind in the near future, and a little farther down the road, a pistol caliber lever rifle, (i'm stuck i don't know if i want a 44 magnum, a .357 magnum or a 45 long colt) as of now leaning toward some 1866 or 1873 type configuration in .357 magnum due to ammo cost (38 spl being cheap, .357 mag can bring down whitetail, hogs, yotes) good to be here and see yall tomorrow.

Welcome to the fire. :D
The 1866 is a beautiful rifle but if you're planning on a .357 Magnum you'd best get the 1873.

I'd recommend the .357 if you want a lever and handgun and you're just starting into shooting or would want the handgun mostly for personal protection, but either of the others will do. I like Ruger's ugly little lever action .22 - short lever throw, magazines come out (we cross the road alot to shoot, and it is annoying having to unload a tube just to walk 100 feet down the road and cross it), and just FUN to shoot.

Hi and it sounds like you've got the bug. I'd start out with the 357 or the 45 especially if you are planning on getting a companion revolver for it. (You would want your lever to get lonely now would you?) Lots of good folks here. You have fallen in with a good crowd.

Howdy...and welcome....
Well it looks like you have a decent wish list....
But dont worry....if you hang around here long enough...
you will get this sickness...call leveritus...
and eventually you will get one of each....trust me....
22....your choices ....winch 9422 or marlin 39 bot are great
but there are a few others...but i like these two...
Dont buy the 66....get a model 73, 92 or 94...so you can shoot
both the 38 and 357....I do like the 66 though!
your gonna find out there are many choices for each caliber
spend some time on gunbroker.com and dont be afraid to ask!
and once again welcome

Welcome to The Forum, MrWiggins. Bein' particularly fond of the toggle links, I heartily recommend the '73 if you're wantin' .357M. The '66 ain't available in .357M, I do believe it comes as .38Spl.

Tho' if you're looking for a powerhouse you might look at the Rossi '92 in either .44Mag (heard they had some bore diameter issues a while back... and ain't sure if the correct spec ones are imported yet... worthy of checkin' before buyin'); or my personal favorite, the .Rossi '92 in .45 Colt! Can easily withstand .45+P level loads, just think .44 Mag with a .452 diameter! Or they can be loaded down to CAS specs and plinked with.

thanks for all the warm welcomes. it's been a busy week, i went shooting last weekend, and i still havn't had a chance to clean the 11 guns i ended up taking (8 pistols and 3 rifles).

as for the lever guns in my near future, i'm thinking a henry golden boy for the 22lr and a winchester 73 replica in .357 mag, can yall recomend some manufactures?

as for you fellas talking about pistols, as you can see i like pistols. i'm thinking my smith and wesson could keep a .357 rifle company, and maybe my ruger single six can keep the 22 rifle company :D.
