OT: Ruger Old Army

I previously posted these Ruger OLD ARMY modifications on a Ruger forum where they were well received. With the great tastes in guns our forum members have here, I figured some of you would like to see them too...

Letâ€™s start off with:

Mod #1, Target Front Sight
I hand cut and filed one each of these for my Dad's and my Old Army's years ago, as the undercut partridge-style sights are much better (for us) for target shooting. Plus, we don't plan to be doing any "fast draw" with the ROAâ€™s anyhow!

Mod #2, Target Rear Sight
Because every decent front sight deserves a decent rear, my Dad and I added Millet rear sights to our Old Army's. Some might question what this sight offers versus the stock Ruger model, and the basic answer is the WIDE and FLAT rear blade, which is the entire back of the sight. To us, this sight blade is more consistent in all lighting conditions; whereas the stock Ruger blade is inset into the sight body and you can sometimes pick up some glare off the sight itself.

One note... While we bought Millet sights intended for the Ruger Blackhawk series, if I remember right, we had to do some minor and careful filing* to fit these correctly. (* As my Dad would say, â€œGo slow and check the fit often, as the metal-take-off tool works MUCH better than the put-back-on tool!â€

Cool mod's. I haven't done much to my ROA other than a Bowen rear sight. I need to play with it more. It's a kick in the pants to shoot.

I have done absolutely nothing to my ROA but get it a Simply Rugged 120...

I have two Ruger old armys one stainless one blued.I just fired my blued one with pellets for the first timer.They were not very accurate but sure did speed up loading time.They were 30 gr pettets noncrossive.Its fun to shoot them .I will buy some new caps the ones i shot were almost 25 years old could have been the problem.i have packmyer grips on both of mine.I like larger grips.I need to get a conical bullet mold for mine.The ruger old army is one of the strongest black powder revolvers on the market.I got mine for $200 and $250 years ago.They are tough guns.
