That looks like the kind of engraving you see on currency.

Can you imagine taking that to a cowboy shoot and firing black powder through it? Fun fun!

FWIW. the Winchester Model of 1873 is Classic American design at its BEST. The Engaving is the Icing on the Cake,

Don't know when it was done, but here is some additional info:

Close-up view of an absolutely magnificent Winchester 73 that Bob Swartley engraved "after the art of Albert Bierstadt." Swartley's scrollwork is so distinctive that it can be recognized from a distance by anyone even slightly knowledgeable of his work. His bulino work is delicate and utterly exquisite.

I have always been a fan of Bierstadt's paintings, and actually owned one for a few years. The title was "Crossing the Toulumne,1868" and it now resides in a fellow collector's bar. The money was used wisely, but I should have kept the painting. Oh well, it has a good home among many other California artists work.
