that distance".......so says one of the bank robbers to his friend when seeing SABATA on the other side of the canyon. SABATA answers with 7 shots from his '66 Winchester resulting in the demise of 7 bank robbers.
The '66 in the film has an interesting looking barrel ..... apparently a barrel extension of sorts for those longer than normal shots. 8)
Only in the movies! :D

Do you mean to tell me that you didn't know that adding that extention would add 900 yds to the guns range! That's why the anti's outlawed it!

IIRC, the '66 "Yellowboy" was chambered in .44 Henry/Rimfire. 200 grain bullet, 26 grains of blackpowder for 1,200 fps. How far could it go before it ran out of steam - 300 yards? 350?

Looks like it's had it's barrel swapped out for a military looking barrel, with that lump in the middle. Seems I've seen some old military rifles with that same look.

Nate Kiowa Jones,
I was wondering about that! Thank you for clearing that up. :D

homefront,
In the New Haven Arms 1865 catalog, they indicate that
the .44 Henry's penetration in wood at 100 yards is 8 inches; at 400 yards, 5"; and it carries sufficient force to kill at 1,000 yards.

In addition, On October 6 and 8, 1866, the Official Swiss Commission at Aarau, Switzerland, tested the Infantry Model of The Winchester Repeating Rifle at extended ranges.

At 300 paces, 30 shots were fired. 27 grouped into a 12" x 12" area with 2 shots 4" below the main group, and 1 4" above. All shots would have hit a man sized target with ease.

At 600 paces, 31 shots were fired and fell into an area 5 feet high by 4 3/4 feet wide. 28 of the rounds went into a group measuring 2 1/2 feet high x 2 feet wide.

At 1000 paces, 40 shots were fired at a target 8 feet high and 10 feet wide. 31 bullets connected and impacted into an area 6 1/2 feet high x 7 feet wide. There was a cluster of 21 shots that went through the target within a 3 foot high x 4 foot wide area.

I know that I would not want anyone shooting at me with a Henry Rifle at 1,000 yards....they might get lucky!

Sixgun,
One can never have enough time on their hands! :D I need to spend some time making bullets and loading ammo for the 2008 shooting season.

marlinman93,
Before shooting the bad guys, the rifle had a barrel a little longer than the magazine. Although it did not show it in the movie, the barrel extension was added before shooting the bad guys. A take down of a different sort! 8)
