OT-Home made sabot slugs-YIKES!!

Post by Jason_W »

I now have almost everything I need to make my first batch of 12 ga sabot slugs. Ballistic products offers a plastic sabot designed to hold a .50 cal pistol bullet of the 350 or 500 grain persuasion. They recommend using only new fiocchi hulls and since the 2.75 inch hulls are on backorder until the cows come home, I ordered in 3" hulls. I have some 500 grain hornady pistol bullets and I'm now just waiting on the powder.

Here's the catch. BPI's starting data gives these things a MV of 2300 f/s  I can probably back off the charge an additional 10%, but still . . .

But hey, I already dislocated the left shoulder, why not make the right one match

That ought to be fun in a lightweight H&R single shot! 500 gr. slug at 2300 fps is more umph that a lot of the big Nitro Express rounds.

Quite frankly, I'm a bit frightened. But my curiosity is outweighing my fear.

Maybe you could have a friend shoot it first. tell them you want to get some really good pictures of the moment of ignition with your handy cam so you can post it on an online recoil study.

That's just mean, evil, nasty, sneaky and cruel. I like the way you think...

"........Here's picture of solid turned 12ga slugs that Rob makes.
They are flat on one end and hollowpoint on other.
They can be shot either direction. Aluminum ones
are 346gr, brass 1080gr........If you need any
contact him. He, RIP, and others on AR are testing
them with different powders. I have gotten similiar brass
ones to 1900 fps in NEF with RMC case, with
140 gr the new RL-17. Ed ......"

Sometime I want to load up saboted cartridges, like the "accelerator" ones commercially sold for .308 and .30-06 and .30-30, only maybe for .45-70, .444 Marlin, or .500 S&W. Can't find the proper sabots or load data though... kind'a hampers things, huh?
