What to do?

Post by Goat »

I have 3 1894 Marlins. A 41 mag, a 357mag, and a 32/20. I really like this platform but have a problem. The 357 and the 32/20 were both straight stocked guns as they came from the factory but the 41 was not. I have swapped the trigger plate and butt stocks on the 32/20 and the 41 leaving me with a straight stock 41 and a pistol grip 32/20. I have lived with the pistol grip on the 32/20 but DO NOT like it. I know that some of you out there have made the conversion to staight stock by cutting down the wood, cutting the lower tang and staightening the lever. I could handle the wood work and even the lower tang but am uncomfortable with straightening the lever. Any suggestions? I do not wish to send the rifle back to Marlin for the conversion. Do you know of anyone wishing to go from straight stock to pistol grip? Thanks for your replies.

I don't think it's feasable to do the conversion by straightening the lever. No way to get it even close and not look bad. Best to just purchase a lever and either grind the lower tang, or swap it also.

Can you show a picture of the 32-20 as it is?

 Send the .32-20 to me, I'll do a detailed study of the issue and file a report. You just might receive a straight stocked .32-20 back! But, as you know... there are no guarantees in the consulting world!

Old Savage,
I have been saying that I needed to take the step and learn how to post pics here and on the other gun related sites I frequent...I guess I need to quit talking and do it. Now if I can find the wife's digital camera....

That sure is a pretty rifle. Looks like it'd be great as a varmiter... what with that handy carryin' handle on top!

Keep yer eyes open at Numrich Arms for the following:
Finger Lever
Trigger Plate
Stock Assy

btw, the only one "out of stock" at present is the finger lever; and while it shows as a straight lever, I am not 100% sure that it is:
Finger Lever.

Now, get busy, as someone else on here may be looking for the exact same parts... and may not dawdle gettin' THEIR order in!

Leave it alone! I prefer the pistol grip.

That is a really distinctive looking rifle. I almost want to trade you wood but mine is octagon so it wouldn't work.

I think it looks better to me in the picture than it does in real life. I wondered why I do not like it better but then I look at my other 1894s and the couple of 336 Texans I've got and remember I just love the look and feel of the straight stock guns. Even my Savage 99 is a late production "A" with the 20" bbl and the straight stock. My sole exception is my 336 in 35 Remington. Why doesn't Marlin give us the option of the straight stock on all their lever guns???

I personally think your .32-20 is a fine looking rifle as-is, and were it mine I wouldn't touch a thing!
