30-30 still works

Post by FLINT »

Just thought I would share. First lever kill this year. Marlin 336C with win. 150 grain silvertip. Shenandoah Co. Va on little North Mtn. probably would have been a 4 pt. but one of the antlers was broken off a few inches up, so he only had 3. Its funny, all the bucks i've killed with this rifle have been 3 pointers. This is number 4.

Yes sir, the 30-30 still works! Looks like a nice spot you were hunting in. That 30-30 of yours should be good for many more Whitetail Deer.

Great job. Of course I can't say I recognize the exact spot where you are standing, but several times during the 1970s two buddies and I hunted Shennandoah Co. for deer and were always successful. We were stationed in Washington, D.C. in the Navy and lived in Alexandria, VA. Really neat to see a guy with a deer where I might have tread sometime in the past.

Thanks for the post. Nice Buck.

Gosh, I read in Guns&Blamo that you needed a 6.85mm Super-Short Belted magnum with a special compressed dual-base powder ignited by a benchrest magnum primer, and have to use a molly-lubed partitioned bullet to kill deer.

You SURE that was really just a 'thutty-thutty'?

Flint,

Congratulations on your hunt success. And with a simple, handy, unencumbered carbine to boot.

Makes my day.

Nice work, although I have to say that I could have killed that deer too, what with him hanging in a tree and all

I have a 1917 era 94 that was my grandfather's that has accounted for more deer than the 2 safes of other guns. It has worked for 3 generations of hunters and will work for the fourth generation if he listens to me and stops reading gun magazines. The gun is 95% except in this case 95% of the bluing is has worn off including the Redfield receiver sight. I could have traded that sight many times for another gun. Not in my lifetime.

Thanks guys,

yep, this guy is in the freezer now, and you are right, where I hunt, I can't imagine needing more than the 30wcf.

I gotta agree with AJ, I think you were on the verge of a embarassing situation there. You must be new to hunting to not realize you need a 600whizbangsupermagnumdeerasassin capable of destroying a tank at a mile and a half to kill a whitetail. Sir if you send me that rifle before you let this get around, I will get rid of it for you and not let the gunwriters harass you...boy some people, thinking you can kill an armor plated whitetail with a 30-30. You also forgot the sniper gilly-suit, camouflage paint, and super-vision range finder. "Guns & Ammo" and "Gun World" writers are scratching their heads wondering how you got that deer without all the stuff mentioned above. Aside from that, though-and a bit more seriously, be sure to remember the well-seasoned cast iron cookware when you fix up those venison dishes with grandma's old recipes.

Massanutten mountain wow spent a few summer weeks at camp there. Does the pool still have a layer of thin ice on it....in JUNE! Great times there sure brought back some memories when you said that...haven't thought of it in years. I really like this site. Tom
