Puma 92.....45 Colt and 454...Hey Kiowa Jones!!

Post by Lobo »

Hi All,

I have it in my mind that the Puma 92 in 454 Casull has the magazine threaded and screwed into the action to prevent the recoil from pulling the magazine tube loose during firing. My Puma 92 in 45 Colt apparently does not as there is a small screw right at the muzzle attaching the front end of the magazine to the barrel. As this muzzle attachment causes verticle stringing as the barrel heats, I'd rather not have it.

Does anyone know if the two magazines are interchangeable.....my rifle needing tapping, of course.

NKJ will chime in and knows, now doubt...

I do like the .454's system better in theory, but don't know it's shortcomings and advantages long term.

If that screw is causing your vertical stringing, it means the screw is bottomed out in the barrel. It shouldn't be. I do believe that shortening that screw so it doesn't apply upward pressure is a much easier fix than redoing the entire magazine.

THAT makes lots of sense; I hadn't thought about the actual accuracy issue - was just thinking about the magazine design. Good point. I'd just shorten the screw a bit (not so much it slips out...!).

The 454 and 480 guns have twin mag tubes. An outer that screws into the frame and the inner screws into the outer at the muzzle. So, it won't work in your single tube gun.

As for that screw Paco covered that well in this article.

Steve,

My Puma 92 has the long octagonal barrel on it, and has a dovetailed magazine support 4 or 5 inches from the muzzle. I was hoping NOT to have another dovetail right at the muzzle.

That can be done. The easiest would be to use the Marlin parts and eliminate the existing hanger. To look decent the existing hanger dovetail would need to be filled, too.

One shortcoming of the double tube magazine is that it makes the assembly fat to the point of being less attractive in my view. It also causes problems with the wood at the tip of the forend - check for splitting.
