OT: Lost my best friend today

Post by LeverBob »

I lost my best buddy today.

Had to put down my dog Cassie-14 yrs. 3 mos.

She was a half Lab/half 'Yote mix. Best dog I ever had. Had ears like a jackass & could hear the rabbits in the high pasture above me. Loved to patrol the perimeter of my property & more than once chased 'yotes over the fence to keep them from the chickens. Almost caught hawks after the chickens as well.

Thru the fence near the horses, she faced off a 3-legged mountain lion having bad thoughts about my nags. He still comes around friends places nearby. I don't think he would have liked facing my mare (who can be an ornery mean azz bxtch).

Was the most loving & gentle soul & the best trail dog I ever had.

Sorry I can't post pics boys...rreal hard times right now.

Sorry to hear that. I put down my husky this summer, hardest thing I have ever done. I feel for you friend and wish you all the best. They really are man's best friend. Take care and heal fast.

Lots of us have had such a friend and we sure do understand. I'm convinced that they'll be waiting on the other side when our turn comes.

Sorry for your loss. It is hard to let your dog buddies go. I know, I have lost two Golden Retrievers over the years and still tear up when I talk about them.

bummer.

got an eleven year old, on the downward slide.
the one year old pup plays too rough, just like the old guy
did when he was young. what a short memory he has.

they have such a short time with us, i try and have a new
generation coming up to take up the emotional slack. nothing
like a pup to make you smile again [ or exasperated ].

grieve well.
careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

Thanks much boys...I'd ride the trail with any one of you. Even an old withered cuss like me has a heart and losing a close friend is tough.

I'll save the tears for later...only bad thing is that it makes my boots wet.

CC (Crazy Cora) has stepped up to take her place. She's got a lot of trail ahead of her to even begin to fill Cassie's tracks. She's a Queensland Terrier (meryl)...I think she'll step up to the plate & make a few tracks Herself. 'Ya think?

Best to you all & I'm real proud to be a part of this family.

Thanks:

To Hobie...I know we will meet again. So will we.

To Joe: Thanks my Compadre. We'll ride a trail soon.

To Tycer: She will eat a boar hog on the way. Hope she leaves enough for us.

To All: G-D bless & love you all & thanks for your support.

You have my deepest sympathies Bob. I know how tough it is loosing a furry teen.

Take comfort in knowing you will one day be reunited.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

LB,

Putting down a loyal and faithful friends over many years has brought some of my most heartfelt tears. My new companion, pard, friend is asleep at my feet, loyal and faithful like those before her.

I'm so sorry. These are tough losses, every one of them. (Too many times myself). They're all very much family. Non-dog folks never quite catch on, but it's so true. You'll get through it but will never forget...but you shouldn't anyway.

Sorry bud, I have three collars hanging in my gun room each to a special friend who has gone on before me and I am afraid a fourth will go on the wall before too many more years. Each time I see these collars though I remember what a great friend each was and it makes me glad to have had them in my life..it helps a little. God Bless and may he help you through this. Tom

I must be allergic to dogs. Everytime I hear of one passing to Dog Heaven my eyes water something terrible and my nose runs something awful. With a full beard it is not a pretty sight. Only thing that makes it stop is a new pup. Works every time. As a nurse, my prescription is to get a pup and call me in the morning. I swear after every one of my dogs passes I vow never to get another and my wife who is a whole lot smarter than me will place a tiny warm vulnerable little fur ball in my lap and I'm cured. She is either a saint or tired of watching a grown man mope around for days on end.

LB,

You have my condolences. They give so much, and ask so little in return -- just the priviledge to love us. Losing a furry friend is a painful and difficult thing; it never gets eaasier. I still mourn over every one I've lost. I firmly believe that our God of love will ensure that our loved ones, four-legged or otherwise, will be with us in the eternal afterlife. Be consoled knowing that Cassie fulfilled her purpose and was rewarded every day with your affection and attention. My prayers are with you and Cassie.

It's a tough thing to lose someone that loyal and trustworthy. The pain never really goes away, but sometimes you get to laugh and remember the good times.

George Graham Vest speaking during the 1870 Burden vs. Hornsby court case (The Old Drum Trial) in Warrensburg, Mo:

"Gentlemen of the jury, the best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter whom he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us -- those whom we trust with our happiness and good name -- may become traitors in their faith. The money that a man has he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolute, unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world -- the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous -- is his dog.

"Gentlemen of the jury, a man's dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow, and the snow drives fiercely, if only he can be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

"If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."

My sincere condolences. I know by experience the ache that causes the heart.

Hopefully the sting will soon pass and be replaced with the many happy memories you created together. It don't seem like a fair trade now but I bet you both would do it again if you had a choice. Luckily our hearts are big enough to hold those memories with room to spare to take in another lucky pup.

Prayers sent for you both.
Whit
