OT- 10 MM Delta

Post by 2ndovc »

Used to belong to a good friend of mine that passed away about a year and a half ago. I was able to buy it from his family when they were selling off his collection. Knew it had been one of his favorites.

I'm finally getting around to ordering dies and components to start reloading for it.

Any suggestions on bullets and powder. Pretty much going to be target/ trail gun status.

Been sittingin a case since I bought it. Was bumming me out that he was gone. But now I think he'd be happy to see it get some use.
He had it done up to shoot IPSC but I don't think he ever did.
I'm not a big fan of ported pistols but it's such a tack driver I'm not going to mess with it.

Had best results with Sierra 180grs. HP and Sierra 190grs. FPJ Match bullets and a healthy dose of HS 7. Also very accurate with 200grs. bullets. Blue Dot is a good powder choice too. I am sure you will love the performance of the 10 Auto!

I'll get you our loads for my son's Elite later today.

Thanks guys.

Ravenman, love the looks of your 10mm. I've been thinking about having a standard barrel put back in mine but not sure yet. It's such a great shooter as is. The Old Man always told me " If you got a straight shoting pistol, don't mess with it".

I've been carying it around with me all day today. :D

I've got a Colt Double Eagle in 10mm, a very nice shooting pistol.

If that coffee can of brass is still available, I'm interested.

Jason, that is a pretty piece, and it's great you were able to get it in honor of your friend...I agree with your first post: shoot the heck out of it and enjoy it; I'm sure that's what he would want you to do. Jim

Good for you!

I've been using Blue Dot as the best performer with 180s in my Contender 14" (with Choate extension). About like a .38-40...

I bought my Delta Elite new in the mid 80's and I have always loved shooting it. It is still my carry gun when weather allows me to carry a full size 1911. I have always likes the Hornady 170 XTP's with some AA #7 under it, also load the 175 hardcast semi wad-cutters over the same powder.

Man, those are some of the nicest 10mm Colt's I have ever seen. I didn't know they ever made "the Delta" in 10mm and S.S. Wow! I just bought a Kimber in 10mm as it was the only auto I could get in CA in that caliber, but I have been happy with it. I did have to change the recoil spring from the factory 18.5 to 22 lbs to shoot Double Tap Ammo. I prefer the 180 and 200 grain rounds. I haven't reloaded for it yet, but AA#9 looks promising for those bullet weights.

Here's a pic of mine with my grips from Esmeralda.

185 gr. Laser Cast .401=AA7 9.2-9.8 gr. CCI 300 Large Pistol Primer.

Hornady 180 gr. HP/XTP=AA7 10.2 gr. CCI 300 Primer. COL 1.260.

Hornady 200 gr.=AA7 9.1 gr. CCI 300 Primer. COL 1.250-1.255.

Raineir 165 gr FP=AA7 11.1 gr. CCI 300 Primer.

Hornady 155 gr. HP/XTP=AA7 11.4-12.2 gr. CCI 300 Primer. COL 1.250

We weren't comfortable with the Rainier's. They are a bit soft to our liking.

I like Hodgdon's Titegroup for my .38-40. Planning to try it in the 10mm.

My oldest son has been gleaning as much information about the Delta Elite as he can find for the past couple years. He is planning on replacing a few parts--rod and springs(?) in the coming months. He has learned he can save his gun a bit of stress by doing so. If you have specific questions you would care to ask, I can relay them to him. He's away at college. He would love to help, I'm sure.

LB. Thanks for the info. I've been using a lot of XTPs. Looks like a good place to start.

Tutt. Really like those grips. Where did they come from?

Ridgerunner, Did that pm get through?

I've got a bunch of reloads that came w/ the pistol. FMJs and lead bullets. Niether work very well and I don't know where they came from.
Bought a box of Rem. FMJs and they shoot really well. The accuracy of this thing is amazing.

The wood blanks came from Mike at Stabilized Wood. It's where Carey C. of CLC Grips gets his stabilized wood from. Then they were made into Grips by Esmeralda. Her grips are first rate in fit and finish.

Jason,
You are right; don't fix if ain't broken!
Got a free Clark ramped barrel that was the reason for my built up. I am a great fan of the 10 Auto - any 10 Auto. Have also a Bren Ten Standard. It's my thinking that the 10 Auto is the best pistol cartridge.

Cowboytutt,
Your Kimber is a real eyecandy.

Also a nice addition to a major power 1911 is one of these from EGW:
I have tested it and it really helps with any heavy loads for slide life while it did not impeed any function...that is actually how John Browning designed it. 8) its the squared bottom that slows the slide action slightly without needing a real heavy recoil spring.

Got a 10mm long time ago and first shot blew the x out of the X ring @ 25 yds with the Hornady 170's @ top speed. I like Blue Dot, AA9, AA7 and for light loads, 231. Presently using 180 cast TC and 180 Hornady FMJ. Great round. :D

No Colt here, just an ugly Glock 20 that thinks its a target pistol
It's actually one Glock I will never get rid of.
I load the 200 gr. LaserCast over a full case of AA#9

Heres a pic with the 6" Jarvis barrel.
