Bobcat in the back yard

Post by crs »

Just now, while pacing about on a cell phone call, I was looking out into the back yard and a bobcat strolled along below the back Japanese lugustrum hedge. :o
After a few yards, it eased back under the branches and dissapeared, but it was indeed a medium sized bob kitty. How cool!
This is the "city" house we just listed for sale and though we have seen coyotes from time to time, the is the first time I have seen a bob cat. The bunnies and mice better be on guard or there will be no tomorrow for them!

Naturally, all my long guns are already out at the farm, so I did not bother to waste my "personal protection" pistol ammo on a putty tat. :D

Never, ever corner one. They say there is nothing in the North American animal kingdom like a threatened bobcat. Also is said that while in a hypothetical fight between a bob and a mountain lion, the lion would technically have the goods to "always" come out on top (size/weight, power) but would never try it as the toll exacted would be so high in the process of killing it. Having had two half bobs, I believe it. While they were sweet puttycats around us humans, they were very effective and ruthless hunters--and I would not have wanted to cross them.

Nath - at the farm. However, the cat was only visible for a few seconds and I would have needed to have the shotgun or rifle at ready to get a shot.

Fella I worked with a short time years ago had a bobcat. It was a kitten when found with 2 others under a brush pile. He raised it to full grown. He said it was tame enough to pet when it was in a good mood. It would come inside and curl up next to the fire but was never a lap cat. The dogs in the area drove it nuts though. He had to get rid of it because it would run from the dogs only so long, but when cornered it would begin to kill 'em. Neighbors weren't happy. I'm not sure if he put it down or found a place for it.

I've only seen one live bob cat and that was in a zoo. What do they weigh? Just curious.

As far as the fight between a Mountain Lion and a Bobcat, that is what would be termed a Pyrrhic Victory. That is one in which the price is victory is barely less than the price of defeat. Named after a General Pyrrhus who won, but was heard to say that another such victory would finish him.
One of my co-workers, Wanda, has a son who shot a Bobcat with an arrow. He has the mount. I'm impressed with his calling, concealment, and bow shooting skills.

I had one in the rock trap of my combine... It only took me 2 weeks to find it!!!! STINKY

I was cutting river bottom land in Oklahoma (Ponka city, Red rock area) and yes I have ran baby deer and skunks threw but the bobcat made it into the trap. it started to smell after a week and at the end of two weeks I was committed to tear that machine apart till I found it!!!
But the guy I cut for in Gerry OK. shot 3 or 4 and he had one mounted it sits on a table in the dining room He claims ( Its a Biggun).... Thats okie talk

BTW - this morning two neighbors told me they had each seen a bobcat in their yards last summer. One of them took pictures.

There's one laying on top of my desk shelf right now :) She don't move much though... anymore. ;)

Took her while deer hunting with a muzzleloader - needless to say, she went right down. I would've got her sister too but my buddy Smitty came over after hearing the shot to see what I got and she darted out of her hide too fast for me to get a shot off.

crs,
Thanks for the link. I read it and saved it. I've got a 20+ pound yellow and white tom kitty at home right now. He's a hand full even when he's in a good mood.
