Yet another 45/70 question

Post by Bronco »

Howdy, I spent a lot of time developing my 50-110 loads. However with the Browning 1886 SRC am getting I would like to gather some knowledge from you all.
I looked at Midway and the bullet weights run all over the place 300gr to 500gr cast GC. for the 45/70. Have any of you found that the heavier bullets are more accurate than the lighter ones. Figure 100yds or so with it so I am not worried about flattening out the trajectory.

My 1886 Browning SRC works best with 400 to 420 grain cast loads. And it does not seem to care if they are mild or hot.

I have generally found the same thing. I have worked up to 440grs with equally satisfactory results. I have found that my plinker load, 400gr Bearcreek Supply soft cast at 950FPS does print 6" higher at 25-50yrds than my buster loads. 1886.

With my 1895 the Winchester factory 300gr. hollow points are the most accurate factory loads in my rifle. However with handloads the 405gr Remington bullet is the most accurate.

In my Marlin - I have not noticed much accuracy differance between the Hornady 350 grainers and the Remington 405 - they pretty much shoot the same at 100 yds. I have not done much testing beyond 100 - but in reading, longer bullets will actually settle out more past 100 yds so your 200 yard accurcay might be equal to your 100 yrd.
