.22mag solids or HP's?

Post by Rusty »

When shooting .22 mags out of my Henry I'm wondering what would be the best carrying around stuff?

I always had better results shooting critters with the hollowpoints.

When I had a 22 mag I only used hollow points, they seemed pretty effective on groundhogs out to 100 yards if I did my part.

I'd shoot the ones that shoot most accurately. I like the CCI Truncated Cone FMJs.

Years ago a pal of mine shot a 22 mag alot, thats why I like it as I have seen how it performs.
Anyway, he bought some CCI solids but they just seemed to drill small varmints, but,,,,, when he gently filed the copper tip away they did a good job of them but not explosive.

The round is all about velocity and shock. And if you are not wanting to eat your targets, go with HP's. You can still take head shots...

Another option is the expanding tipped bullet...

.22 mag ammo has gone a lot of differnet directions since I was shooting it 15 or 20 years ago. Lightweight bullets, some with those little plastic pointy thing on the end, are commonplace now. CCI had just come out with it's lightweight MiniMag+V and everyone thought it was the rage. Accuracy was questionable, down range energy suffered and pentration suffered. The way it was back then and from what I hear today, good ol' 40gr HP's are still the way to go, just as god intended. CCI or Winchester, check them and see what shoots best.

Solids are not good stoppers. The only time I ever use them is if I am out after pelts and wish to minimise damage.

Like others have said, you need to find what the rifle likes. I had a CZ452 American that I tweaked a little and it shot 5 round,sub-moa, 100yd groups about 50% of the time using Winchester 34gr JHP Supreme's.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

My Marlin likes those cute little 33gr. Remington ballistic tips.

Very, very, accurate.........

My CZ likes the heavier bullets. The newer ballistic tips, while devastating
are no where near as accurate(for me). All depends on the rifle.

As far as small game, as the others have said. If you're going to
keep it go for the vitals w/ an FMJ.

Man if I could find a 22 mag semi auto rifle I would jump on that and not look back.

Keep your eyes open for a Ruger 10/22mag they come up every now and then on the auction sites.

My old Marlin 783 loved the CCI 40gr Maxi Mags. But man those HP's tore stuff apart.

Depends what you want to do. I use HPs for everything, as I like to practice with what I carry. A friend of mine took a .22mag in the chest at 3ft and it went all the way through stopping just under the skin in his spine and missed all the vitals (solid, DOC said a HP would have killed him). It was out of a Ruger Single Six 4 5/8 in BBL. He lived and deployed with us a few years later to Iraq and Africa, still working. Try a few of them and go with what your gun likes.

Shawn, current manufacture remington model 597 then theres the H&K 300 and BRNO 611 for used, the 10-22 in mag has problems with breaking why they discontinued it ruger is currently making the 96-22 mag a lever though.

I use the solids for 4 legged predators and would use hp's for 2 legged predators. danny

I was on Remington's website a week ago and they listed the 597 TVP in Mag but yesterday it wasn't there. I had a Marlin 922M the felt great, was good to carry, but was so freakin' fussy with ammo it wasn't funny! It would only shoot Winchester 40gr. solids and that was it. I tried every different box of ammo I could find at the time, the lighter the bullet the wider the group.
