I guess I'm just soft hearted (UPDATED!!!!!)

Post by firefuzz »

Soft headed is more likely. If you will recall I finally got back my ole '92 Browning in .357 a few months back, NEVER to leave my hands again. Yeah right.

I took a good friend of mine and his 10 y/o son shooting yesterday afternoon and I took the '92 along for the boy to shoot, all he's ever shot was a .22 rifle. Sure enough, the boy fell in love with the rifle, shot it pretty good too. About 2 hours after I got home I get a phone call from the boy. (now you have to understand this youngin's called me Uncle Rob since he was in diapers even tho he's no blood kin) Seems he has been saving his money, had $300, to buy himself a deer rifle and REALLY liked and wanted to buy that .357, that he had never seen such a BEAUTIFUL rifle and wanted to know how much I wanted for it.

I started to tell him it wasn't for sale but it caught in my throat and I told him $500. He sounded pretty down hearted about until I told him he could work out the rest mowing my lawn this summer. He said they'd be right over.

He and his Dad got to the house shortly later and we agreed to how many times and how often the lawn would be mowed for the rest of the money. I also added the stipulation that if he ever wanted to sell the gun I got it back for the same $500. His Dad wanted to write up a "contract" for us, but I explained that real men just shook hands over gun deals and that real men never reneged on a handshake deal.

The boy left with a darn fine rifle, 4 boxes of ammo for it (that kid's drives a hard bargin  ), and a smile on his face as big as Texas. He left me with a good feeling and the knowledge I'll get to spend some good time with him this summer...oh, and $300.

I do miss the gun already tho :( , but I do have another one. So to soften the blow I'm looking at a new Rossi '92 in .357 with a 24" barrel.

Rob

P.S. The 44mag '92 Browning I bought a couple of weeks ago now resides in another bud's gun safe...But that was another deal that didn't include any lawn mowing 8) .

Good on ya, Firefuzz. Guns come and go, but morales and good lessons in how to conduct yourself honorably in life are, well, priceless.

That was very fine for you to do.

As much as you love that rifle that boy treasures it even more.Because it comes from his "Uncle Rob"
A man he admires and respects and everytime he picks it up he will think of you and the true lesson of becoming a fine young man working for his prize gun and the meaning/honor of a handshake.
Well Done!

ye done good Uncle Rob, real good!

Right off hand, I'd say that for a rifle, you've acquired not only some cash and a yard boy for the summer, but a hunting and shooting companion for the rest of your life. i don't know who is luckier, you or the kid. Both of you should be proud of the deal.

This is the third time I've sold that gun to be used by a friend's youngin', but the difference in the other two times is that the parent paid for the gun then. I think maybe this time it's found a permanant home. If not, it's welcome back at the stable here in 8-10 years.

Good on ya firefuzz! Hey, I just bought a rossi 92 NIB yesterday in .357. I really wanted the 24" case harden with a octogon barrel like you, but this 20" was marked down to $386s. Retail was $499. I couldnt pass it up. I also have a old browning 92 in .44 mag. That one is like new too!

Your story put a lump in my throat. As the father of a two year old boy who is obsessed with " Huntin a Bear " I can only imagine how good you made that boy and his Daddy feel yesterday. Well done!
