A pile of hogs with leverguns, revolvers and 1911's
This started yesterday. RKrodle, CRS and I were burning out our lease. CRS called on the cell phone to say hogs were headed towards the feeder. This was in the middle of the day with trucks, trailers and equipment right next to the feeder and the fields burning. Ricky and I snuck up to 35 yards. On the count of 3 we let loose, Ricky with a .38 Spl and Me with a 44 Spl. We killed two white hogs, one that was tonights dinner. I shot Grizzly Extreme ammo. It did not penetrate much, but did the job. After all, it is made to be used on people at close range, not hogs at 35 yards. Later yesterday, while driving a 4 Wheeler around and putting out fires, the hogs came back again, but this time we didn't shoot. Tonight after dinner Big Mike and I decided to try the lease again. Sure enough, within 15 minutes of arriving, 6 pigs showed up 100 yards out. Mike opened fire with his BLR in 308, shooting 165 gr ammo loaded by Grizzly Cartridge. I shot a 7mm-08 (the one that was $194 just before X-Mas) using handloaded 140 gr Nosler Accubonds. Mike knocked down a black one and I shot a small white one. The remaining hogs scrambled into a ditch. We stalked the ditch and some hogs ran out and we double teamed a brown one. Mike was out of ammo for the rifle at this point. We stalked the ditch again and he shot another pig, a small white one with his Springfield GI using 45 hardball. This was Mike's first hogs, and first hunt since moving to Texas. The largest of these was 80 pounds, then 50 pounds, then 30 pounds then 20 pounds. A pretty wide range of sizes for pigs travelling together. All good eatin'!

That is some good hog action! Sounds like Mike will be OK in Texas if he will just carry enough ammo.

Sounds like a very productive day!! Congrats!!
86'er, that looks like a "barrel de-resonator" on your rifle. Is it, and if so, what
kind of results have you had with it?
Thanks much,
John

+1 on both counts. I've never shot a rifle with one of those mounted on them. Does it make a big difference!John in MS wrote:Sounds like a very productive day!! Congrats!!

A 1911? A whole new meaning to "They all fall to hardball". Or maybe "Say 'Hello!' to my little friend!"
OK, I'm done now....
I still haven't taken my Stevens 7-08 out yet. How do you like yours Joe?

Re: A pile of hogs with leverguns, revolvers and 1911's
The cheapo bolt rifle shoots less than 1" groups at 100 yds from the bench. I put the De-Resonator on the barrel moreso to protect it than for the accuracy. I had one several years ago and it didn't make a difference in accuracy. This was a left-over one I had for years but never took out of the package. I moved it around to find the "sweet spot". Where it is now, it appears to make a slight difference when shooting 6 shot groups without cooling between shots. The difference is negligible, maybe 1/2" tighter group of 6. With a 3 shot group it is hard to notice a difference at all. I don't recommend running out to get one with an expectation of shrinking bullet hole groups.

Looks like Mike needs a hat.

great photo, and looks like a great time.
I fished the Frio Sendero last spring with a couple of buddies:
http://fiberglassflyrodders.yuku.com/topic/8498
Remote in the south Texas scrub - there's no public access anywhere around here, and we were the guests of my friend on his cousin's ranch. They live 6 hours away in Houston.
When I asked my friend about the chance of doing it again, he mentioned they had feral hogs on the ranch for the first time and we could combine a sendero-fish/ hog-hunt. He has his Grandad's '92 44WCF saddle gun that he's never shot.
I'm hoping this pans out...

Re: A pile of hogs with leverguns, revolvers and 1911's
I saw a food show on the net where they visited Harrison Ford's son who has a resturaurant in Beverly Hills or someplace out there. His fancy meal was a baby pig cooked for hours in fat on top of the stove. Like a cross between a deep fat fryer and a slow cooker. Those little piggies look to be just about the right size for that.
Congratulations.
Congratulations.

Suckling Pig Confit. Like Carnitas only fancier and more $$$.
I imagine a small wild hog cooked in similar fashion, cooked in the fat of a farmed pig, could be quite tasty.

Re: A pile of hogs with leverguns, revolvers and 1911's
Joe, a couple more quick questions about your 7mm-08 Stevens, if you don't mind?
1. Did you do any tuning or bedding to the stock? I've seen some of these that the
tip end of the stock seemed very close to the barrel, and thought that might need to be relieved, as flexible as the stock is. Also, I've wondered if putting in a good fill of glass bedding in the action area might do anything to help them.
2. Do you mind if I ask what powder you used in your handloads?
Thanks,
john

Aha! Now I know why you called last night - looks like that bunch of hogs has met their maker. Enjoy the pork.

Re: A pile of hogs with leverguns, revolvers and 1911's
Looks like a good time. Where abouts in Texas did you shoot them? The ones around here are not as cooperative, they only show up 2 or 3 at a time and then back into the woods
when your enemy is within range so are you
Re: A pile of hogs with leverguns, revolvers and 1911's
On the Stevens rifle I relieved the fore-end just enough so it didn't touch the barrel. No other bedding was necessary as the action rests on aluminum pillars. The load was 140gr Nosler Accubonds pushed by H4895. We shot these hogs in NE TX near Wolfe City on our property known as the Honey Creek - Black Cat Ranch.
