Kid's rabbit hunt with Henry .22
My oldest son has been really learning to use sights and has been hitting well out to 15 yards with his single shot w/ open sights and his Cricket with peep sights. He wants to use the scope too. We've been having trouble getting him to see through the scope due to size and eye relief. We finally got him shooting well with the scope, again out to 15 yds. It has to be on low power or he can't see through it good enough to hit the target. Yesterday he was rabbit hunting all by himself but didn't find one. Tonight he went again and found one. The deal was he finds it first, then he comes to the house and gets the rifle and one cartridge. He then goes back to stalk the rabbit while I watch from a short distance. Well, he pulled it off. He shot the rabbit at about 30-35 yards right in the head. When he fired the bunny was DRT and he said "head shot". I guess he can see through that scope okay after all. The Henry is the only rifle that he can operate the lever and load the tube by himself. It is very accurate too and is one of MY favorite rifles as well! Here's the proud 4 yr old:

You are doing a great job raising that youngster. Won't be long before he will go with you into the woods.

That is very impressive for his age! I think you just lost your Henry rifle The fact he did it bare footed makes it even better.

Re: Kid's rabbit hunt with Henry .22
Really, really consider a 'red dot' "1x" scope - sounds like he doesn't need the magnification, as he's a good shooter, and not shooting long range (...yet ). They're inexpensive, pretty durable, and although "non-traditional", HE won't care. (It isn't about calming the fears of octagenarian walnut-and-steel levergunners - it's about fanning the flames of enthusiasm of THIS CHILD OF THE 21st CENTURY...!)86er wrote:We've been having trouble getting him to see through the scope due to size and eye relief. Red-dot sights don't require all the head-bobbing, back-and-forth, annoyance of a regular optical scope, and he'll love them. Plus, it isn't like that 'locks him in' to never ever using an optical scope in the future; it just makes his current shooting all the more fun.
It's what I keep on my Ruger 96/22, which is my "go-to" levergun for teaching young'un's to shoot. Of twenty or thirty 5 to 20 year old kids who've shot this gun as their first 'gun' experience, every one HIT the 50 yard target (a 2" steel disk) before the magazine was empty. I've "converted" even some kids-of-Liberals to enjoying shooting, AFTER a bad experience with an open-sighted or traditional-scope-sighted rifle turned them OFF to shooting...

Yep Great Shooting. .
Re: Kid's rabbit hunt with Henry .22
That kind of reminds me of the movie "The Life and Times of the Judge Roy Bean" with Paul Newman.
That poor rabbit never stood a chance. Brandon's reply: "Nope never did and never would have. If he wanted a chance he should have gone somewhere else."
