I just added another cap and ball to the collection...
Cabelas is having a pretty dang good sale on several of their cap and ball revolvers right now - normally $269 or so are on sale for $189 - $199. I couldn't resist and ordered a Pieta 1860 Sheriff's model - 44 cal, 5 1/2" barrel.
I think this will fit right well in my Vaquero holsters.
Looks like this only no cartouche:
$189

That's a good price. Probably get the same price online as in store?

Congrats... a pair would be nice... do they have the 8" barrel or that shorter one pictured? I like those...

I've had one of those for about 10 years, Jac - and found it shoots best with commercial .457" lead RB's over 30gr Pyro "P" or FFFg Goex and the chamber mouth(s) later filled with Crisco lard to keep everything soft/firing and preventive of crossfiring.
Mine has a fluted cylinder, and I liked it enough to fashion a rustic case for it.

Yes, and pay shipping - and they had tax listed this time too - which is strange....TedH wrote:That's a good price. Probably get the same price online as in store?
But I figure if I bought it locally, I'd have to drive to the Cabelas and back and of course, pay the sales tax.
They have the standard 8" model too - this is the shorter "Sheriff's" model - which is probably a made-up thing but I don't care, I like it.
Peter - fluted cylinders would be cool. This is basically a bigger caliber version of the 1862 police 36 cal. They have those on sale too - but I decided on the 44. I just like the bigger boom

I bought another C&B today too - a Colt Walker by Uberti.
Didn't buy it from Cabelas though. A fella had it new un-fired, in box for $350 including shipping and I couldn't pass it up since I've been wanting one of these. Cabelas price was $449.99.
I don't have it in hand yet, but committed to buy. I just have to send the money order Tuesday.

Have you ever used a 45 Colt cartridge conversion cylinder in any 44 C&B's?

Re: I just added another cap and ball to the collection...
I haven't no. I have 45 Colt revolvers if I want to shoot 45 Colt.
But, they have really come a long way - you can get them now or most models and there are even some now that allow for a few slight mods and you can load through the right side - just like the original conversions.
I saw these most recently at Buffalo Arms.
But, to me it doesn't make much sense unless you are wanting to get an old-timey conversion or "off the books" cartridge revolver...
Peter - nice job on the case! And I do like the fluted cylinder - is that a Pieta or Uberti?
And how about seating balls - do you have any trouble with that? I figure if I just don't charge them with so much powder that I have to compress, it should be OK.

I think the reason you have to pay tax on it is because they have a store in your state. Or at least that's why it should be. I figure it's a toss up, the ease of being able to shop in store vs the pain of paying sales tax.

Just got one of those myself, the price couldn't be beat and when they added $5 shipping I was a goner.
Check yours for all of the standard Pietta ills. Mine was peening the cylinder bolt notches pretty strongly.
Also, the red dye in the grips flushes out pretty easily (mine weren't lacquered, they were pretty much just stained and oiled) after which you can buff and oil them with steel wool + linseed and they look pretty darn nice.
I haven't had a chance to shoot mine yet but maybe tomorrow AM!
Best,
Oly

OSOK those 1860 army's look really good. I have a small 1849 model I bougght my daughter with a 4" barrel. It's a pain to load with the short rammer handle. I would be interested in how yours is. My personal favorite is a 1851, seems like it points the best for me. Let us all know how it shoots when you get it. Also try ffg in it, I shoot it in my .36 and it does quite well.

I do - An R&D in a Ruger Stainless Old Army
Jac - the cased 1860 (and the 8" in this/other pic) are both Pietta's.
FWIW, I shoot the samo/samo commercial (Speer) .457" lead RB out of all three .44's, using the same 30gr charge, topped by Crisco lard.
It's not a compressed load, and the ball seats easily in all three revolvers - shaving off a fine lead ring around each chamber mouth @ seating, which IMHO helps contribute to a good seal.

I took advantage of the same sale - which was also on line - and finally picked up the 1861 Navy I've been wanting for a bit. Will post some pics later - hopefully this week.
Congrats O.S.O.K.!!!
Re: I just added another cap and ball to the collection...
I used to own several models of C & B revolvers, and now am down to only one--an EMF Remington that some time ago I had my gunsmith shorten to a 5 1/2 inch barrel. When I got it, it was after I had bought several Colt and Remmie replicas that all had stamped across the side of the barrels "Made in Italy". When the Remmie I still have came, there was no stamping on it (visible) other than "Black Powder Only". I don't know which company made mine for EMF but the "made in Italy stamp" was tastefully done, hidden under the loading lever. On these new ones you guys are depicting this morning, where is the "made in Italy" marking? I'm thinking of getting another, full-size Remmie, but don't want that spaghetti stamp showing. Those are some pretty nice looking revolvers in the pics on this thread today.

Well, looks like the sale is working for Cabelas! $70 off is nothing to sneeze at if you want one of these.
And the stamping on the Pietas shown on the web site on the 1858 looks to be on the side flat of the barrel... and the standard length 8" 1858's aren't on sale - only the 5 1/2" version.
Hmm, looking at their web store again - the "civilian" 1851 44 Caliber is on sale - reading the description they say that Colt did make this after the sucess of the original 36 caliber military version. I always thought this was just a made-up version.
