That looks like what we as kids called puffballs. If you found them at the right time when they were dry they would let out a good amount of "smoke" when you jumped on them.

We gather those up and eat 'em, so I hope it's not alien! :shock:
Gather them when firm (not hard and certainly not hollow)
Slice them about as thick as a cookie.
Mix up an egg and some milk. A dash a pepper would not be amiss.
Put mushroom slice in mixture and press down then release. (This squeezes out air and sucks in the mixture.)
Fry in a skillet until coating looks cooked (think french toast).
Eat it up.
