Are these Winchester Model 94s priced right?

I recently came across a store doing a consignment sale on several Winchester 94s from a collection:

A Centennial 66 .30-30 w/ 24" octagonal barrel and 'gold' receiver; ($450)
A Theodore Roosevelt .30-30 commemorative w/ 24" octagonal barrel; ($450)
A Legendary Frontier in .38-55 w/ 20" round barrel and silver engraved receiver; ($550)
and a William F Cody commemorative .30-30 w/ 20" barrel. ($450, I think)

The boxes came with all of these rifles, but all had been shot and several had some signs of handling/use. Given that the rifles are in really good condition, but that shooting them has negated the collectors value, are these fair prices for a 'shooter'? I am partial to that Centennial 24" barrel .30-30, and a little interested in that .38-55, but I have no knowledge of commemoratives or collectors items.

That Legendary Frontiersman in 38-55 should have a barrel much longer than 20". I think mine is 24".

Yes, but at the time they were calling them "carbines" in their catalogs. Most of the commemoratives of that era came in long and short versions, but not all. I don't recall two versions of the Cody version. The short versions, as you describe, should have been properly called "short rifles" as for the most part they sported 20 inch octagon barrels and a nose-cap type forearm. One notable exception during this time period was the NRA commemorative. For that one, the long version was in musket form, with full-length wood going out most of the way to the muzzle, and the shorter one was a reintroduction of the old Model 64 in styling. A year later they came out with the Model 64A. I wish I had bought one of the latter when I was working down there--it was only out for a little while but it really looked nice IMO.

Thanks everybody. Now I think I know what needs to be done. To correct my prior statement, the Centennial and TR commemorative did have 26" bbl. I guess the .38-55 had a 24" bbl.

Yep, the '66 did have 20" & 26" versions. The Leg. Frontiersman was only a 24". The best resource I've found on "Winchester's" commemoratives can be found at: http://www.doublegun.com/roth.htm. I've saved the info on my harddrive in case the site ever goes away.

Just for comparison purposes, early this Summer I was pretty interested in the Legendary Frontier model in .38-55. It was available from my local toy store NIB for $850. That one was unfired. I ended up not going for it as I fully intended to shoot it and knew that first bullet down the bore would figuratively be dragging a bunch of $20 bills behind it.

A fired Legendary Frontier in .38-55, for $550, that seems more in line to me. Providing it was very gently used. At least that first shot would be a lot less expensive. I'd probably go for it.

I have the same 38-55 and installed a receiver sight ( it's factory drilled and tapped) and it shoots cast very well. I got mine used in nice shape about 8 years ago for about $325.00. It was a good deal I could not pass on.
