32/20: Which bore diameter

Post by 3leggedturtle »

Have way too much time to think last 2 days. Would you rather have a 32/20 with a .308 or .312 bore diameter? Dont be shy about voiceing your opinions on which one you would choose :P
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

.312. If you get the other, you will have to have a VERY expensive set of dies made for it.

What possible advantage would you have in making the cartridge something other than .312?

.308? That would be a .30-20, wouldn't it?

.312 gives you a better selection of bullets, unless your shooting a Thompson center then 308 wouldn't be bad because you could use pointy bullets. Even cast ( Ranch dog offers a 313 , 115 gr GC ) Marlins and Rugers bores are 312. Except for the combo blackhawk 30 carbine/32-20 .

Are you still interested in my 25-20 ammo?

.312 is what I would prefer, if for no other reason that it is the true blue, original bullet diameter, and I'm Old School.

You can't rewrite history. I like the old guns. They are all .311-.313. It don't leave me with a choice. Size right and shoot! :D ----------------Sixgun

My 1917 Winchester 1892 24 inch rifle mics out at .312, there are a lot of very good bullets to choose from.

The funny thing is, when I was going to reline a 32-20 a few years ago (the bore was absolutely a sewer pipe) I found all the liners for 32-20 were .308!! Are new 32-20's .308 or .312? I wanted .312 and actually with a lot of experimenting got a load to shoot in that sewer pipe 1873.
So, to answer your question, I would stick with .312 if i could.

Ben i am, but i have been so busy that i barely get time to shoot. I'm off until tomorow at 1700 and I am going to camp at the range in Holmen. so I can at least keep my finger in shape.
