Old battered 92 for $300

Post by Buster95 »

What do you think? I know the gun is far from prestine, here the description by the seller "Winchester Model 1892 Rifle, cal. 38-40, small plastic wood repair to buttstock, bore in Good cond. with strong rifling with some pitting, S.N. 48XXX Dated 1894, 24" Hex barrel, Brown Patina, This rifle needs repairs (bolt is loose and will not cock the hammer when travelling rearward when the lever is lowered), Sold as is as a project gun to some talented hobbyist, Good condition, $ 300.00" anyone has any idea what is the repair needed for this rifle?

Here asre some pics.

I agree ... a project gun. I would have paid $300.00 for it too.
The bolt being loose could be wear of the rails on the side of the bolt and the groves in the inside of the receiver. I'd figure professional repair on that if I were refurbishing it.
And that's all I'd do to it is refurbish it back to shooting status. Then go have a ball with it. You sure can't hurt it any.

Oh, the rear sight elevator is in backwards and the lever has been bent at one point too.

If it's loose enough to not cock the hammer you should have the headspace checked. If the headspace is acceptable don't let them talk you into welding on the top of the hammer or bottom of the bolt. The simple fix is to remove some off the trigger nose so the hammer doesn't have to go so far back to cock.

Just send it to Steve and let him fix it. I've done that with a 92 that my wife owns and couldn't be happier.

That's remedied by asking questions and "listenin'"! :D .38-40 is a neat cartridge; but, it was mostly loaded with BP and corrosive primers, "back in the day", so be sure to check out the bore carefully before your "buyer's remorse" period is up.
The hammer not staying back is likely an issue with either the hammer notches or not engaging. Like others said, Nate's "da man" on '92s of all flavors. IMO, given how rough of shape it's already in, a rebuild including a metal refinish and new wood wouldn't be out of order. Given the asking price, and potential repair costs, you'd still likely be within the gun's value, even refinished (if done properly). But hey, that's just my opinion, I ain't an expert, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last nite!
