Trail Boss in the 45 Colt and 45-70
I am thinking about picking up a 5# jug of Trail Boss for my 45-70. I just picked up a carbine and am looking for a TrapDoor level load for the new rifle. Also thinking about a new 3000 grain mold.
I am also interested in any other loads you guys have come up with for Trail Boss and the 45 Colt. I am interested in "Gallery Loads" and up to medium power loads for the 45 Colt.
And is anyone doing any "Gallery Loads" with the 45-70 and Trail Boss??
Just looking for your opinion on Trail Boss. I have a good bit of RL-7 and 2400 for my heavier loads in the two cartridges. But I am more interested in lower level loads for a couple of new-lighter firearms I have picked up. Any input is helpful. Thanks guys, Tom.

A general rule of thumb for TB is measure the case capacity at the bottom of the bullet seating depth and then start at 70% of that. Work up from there til you get what you want. Also, never compress TB as it will spike pressures quickly.
I use it to get very accurate an sweet shooting loads in 357 and even 38 spec.

12 grains of Trail Boss is mild and fun with 405 cast in the 45-70. Around 950 fps.
14 grains will get you 1150fps with a cast 300.
Have fun!

You might have trouble finding a 3000 gr. mould.
Thats a little less than a 1/2 pound ya know.

That 3000 grain bulllet will be HOW long? Trail boss is dandy for plinking loads in the 45-70 and for 45 Colt 5.0 grains is a nice 700+ fps load. I shoot 4.5 in my 45 Schofield as the standard load.

It's only for single shot rifles.

I've used between 12 and 14 grains of TB with a 405 cast bullet in my 1886 .45-70 and it makes for a mild load.
4.5 grains of TB with a 250-grain LRN-FP in the .45 Colt is a very pleasant "CAS" type load.

I am assuming for the 45-70 TB loads you are using a standard LR primer. And a Large pistol magnum primer for the 45 Colt with TB?? Tom.

I shoot 6.0 gr under a 200 gr RN for CAS. Less works good but with 6 my Vaquaro`s hit right where the sights are looking for me.
14 gr. under a 300 -350gr. cast bullet is a soft accurate load in my .45-70`s .

I ran across a loading chart for Trail Boss out in the barn today. I looked at it, and thought I needed to do something with it. So I smoothed it out and put it back. I'll get it in the morning and scan it in for you.

I use Trail boss for my 45 Colt Cowboy loads. I use 5.2 Grains with a 250 grain RNFP lead bullet and get about 700 FPS
