Rossi Model 92 Magazine Cap Screw

Post by GregT »

I took a quick look at one of the 24" Model 92, .45 Colt rifles that I have and noticed the front of the magazine tube was noticeably bent downward a little. As I unscrewed the screw (and I did get it out but I had to grind a screwdriver to fit and use a lot of downward pressure), the front of the magazine tube straightened out! Just for the heck of it, I screwed the screw back in again and the tube bent downward again! I know that I have heard that some magazine tubes jump forward under recoil and thus the screw may be tight. Bot, holy cow, what kind of recoil are they talking about?? Also, I had occassion to remove the tube from one of my rifles one time and found I could not get it out without removing the cross pin that is pushed through the lug under the barrel that the tube runs through. With this in mind, there is not one reason to have an over long screw tightened severely in the magazine tube cap. Also, the pressure of the screw on the barrel is going to kill barrel vibrations at that point doing nothing to help accuracy. I shortened the screw so that it bottoms out in the hole drilled for it in the barrel. I initially removed the magazine cap as I am having a local machinist make me a couple of magazine followers out of brass so I can discard the plastic ones that come with the rifle. Anyone else have a magazine cap screw this long?

I've seen it before, and did the same thing you did, just shorten the screw a tad.

I had a similar "screwed up" magazine cap screw on my Rossi .357 that was manufactured about 15 years ago. Hopefully things are better now.

Depending upon what your machinist is charging, you might want to just buy a couple of mag tube followers from our own Nate HERE.

Steve's followers are Stainless Steel. I replaced that plastic thing on mine with Steve's.

What did Steve's cost? I don't know yet what the machinist is going to charge me for brass. I'm thinking probably $10 each as he has always been reasonable.

As with jd45, I bought mine from Winchester some years ago. They were for the Win/Miroku 1892 .45 short rifle and cost $5 each at the time. NKJ said they wouldn't work properly in the Rossi guns but that has not been my experience. I used them in several Rossi guns over the years and the Rossi rifles all worked fine with the Winchester mag tube followers. They are still listed in 2008 parts catalog on the Winchester web site for $7 and change - http://www.winchesterguns.com/customerservice/index.asp. If you want to find out if they have them in stock & current price, call the parts dept at: 800-322-4626.

No, that is not what I said. What I said was they don't work in some of the Rossi's. In some of the guns the small one protrudes into the receiver preventing the carrier from coming up. In some guns the large one doesn't protrude enough so the last round doesn't always clear the receiver hanging the gun up too.
When I first started selling the followers I started with the winchester followers. It didn't take long for these problems to show up.

My apologies, Nate.

I misunderstood what you told me on the phone some time ago when I bought your DVD and we talked about the followers. I thought I remembered you saying they wouldn't work in the Rossi rifles. I just wanted to pass on that they have worked for me in several Rossi rifles and there has never been any trouble feeding or having the last round hang up on the receiver. On one rifle, the diameter of the follower was just slightly too large and it would stick in the receiver but a little sanding on the follower cured that. Guess I've just been lucky with my Rossi's.

No apology needed. When I started with these I was getting the wins from Bob Knap (Winchester Bob). When these problems started showing up we tweeked them to work more consistant in the Rossi's.
