So, how come????

Post by Nath »

How come we never see many targets of 30/30 performance? Or is it me?

We see plenty 38-55 and 375. We see 356 and 45-70 but hardly ever does someone proudly submit a picture of their lowly 30wcf groups!

You fellers got to understand, I miss owning a 94, the last one was a bad'n, or was it? I don't know now.
I did all sorts to it but! Should I of bought new dies, should I of got new brass, or should I of bought some factory to try????

Any way the one I owned before a cross bolt 94ae was a peach and I miss it.
I miss the way it fit me, I miss the simple limitations of a peep and the lack of pressure on me to make a long shot and the only pressure was to get closer or just shrug my shoulders.

I need your help! I need to see extreme photo's of poor targets shot with your garbage 30/30 to stop me missing mine so badly

OK now here I am going to take the heat for this spread out group but what happened was bright sun from behind on a brass bead and me not being careful enough with the site picture with the iron sights. Don't tell anyone I shoot iron sights. :-)

Here is a target of testing two different factory loads.

Shot 32x40 in Lever Action Silhouette the other day in a stout wind with cast bullets. Does that count? :D

Reasons I haven't posted 30-30 groups:

A: After I sight them in I almost never shoot paper again.

B: I haven't shot a 30-30 at paper since I've lived in IL.

I'll have some groups in the future after the 1950 is rebarreled. Until then I might be able to find some of my old targets in my book of holes.
I think I know where it's at.

Hey there Nath -- I don't have any target pictures, but here is a little video Whit Spurzon took of me at my place. It is about the second video we tried to take. The clicking noise is something in his camera.

http://www.youtube.com/user/WhitSpurzon ... iQGPmo3hmM

And here is Whit, with his 30-30 going after the 500 yard dinger as well. If I remember correctly, this is the first day he has shot his new rifle. The breeze was up as well that day.

Needless to say I'm a pathetic camera guy!! 'Bout every time he was gonna pull the trigger I'd get to blathering on... Oh, well, enjoy. Best regards. Wind

Sorry no pics, I havn't shot much at paper other then to confirm it's still sighted in, but I can generally keep a group around 1 1/2" at 100 yds with a peep sight ,and the aperture removed. A little better if I pay attention. :D

Oh, it's a Marlin. :o

Just realized that I don't have a 94 in .30-30, guess I'm going to have to do something about that.

I have 1894s in .375, .38-55 and a .45 Colt but no 30WCFs. How strange.

Only 30-30 I have right now is a lowly Marlin 30TK (Kmart Special, but a super shooter).
I've had a bunch but for some reason I've let them all get away.

Good show this weekend outside of Detroit. Now I have a mission! :D

30-30 shooter don't shoot paper, don't read gun magazines, don't study ballistics. They just hunt North American game, From deer to the Big bears, but they don't tell anybody about it.

Nath, you can expect a range report for my 'new' vintage 1922 Marlin Model 93 30-30 in the near future.
Kirk: An old geezer who loves the smell of freshly turned earth, old cedar rail fences, wood smoke, a crackling fireplace on a snowy evening, pristine wilderness lakes, the scent of
cedars and a magnificent Whitetail buck framed in the semi-buckhorn sights of a 120-year old Winchester.

Great Question. Its because the 30/30 isnt accurate to punch paper or powerful for more than an anemic 'yote. Unless of course you put in a 10" or 14" barreled single shot pistol. Then its good enough for moose and elk to 200 yards
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

My entry into Ranch Dog's Postal Match a couple of years ago... I checked "bench", but I shot off my X-sticks.

Sighting in a new mdl 64A I bought off a forum member several years back, factory sights, 100 yards off X-sticks again.

And then there's my attempt to quantify if there's any advantage to using a Lee FCD:

Here is the gun in my avatar at 100 yards from kneeling. I missed the dot though. That is 33.0 grains of Varget under a Sierra 170 grainer. Tolerable I reckon.
