POLITICS - TR was a REAL President

Post by 41_Marlin »

President Roosevelt concluded his Sixth Annual Message to Congress, on Dec. 6, 1906, with a call for the government to help citizens develop firearms proficiency:

"We should establish shooting galleries in all the large public and military schools, should maintain national target ranges in different parts of the country, and should in every way encourage the formation of rifle clubs throughout all parts of the land. The little Republic of Switzerland offers us an excellent example in all matters connected with building up an efficient citizen soldiery."

Roosevelt would repeat this call with greater urgency in his Seventh Annual Message, on Dec. 3, 1907, demanding that the government do its utmost to encourage children to use guns:

"While teams representing the United States won the rifle and revolver championships of the world against all comers in England this year, it is unfortunately true that the great body of our citizens shoot less and less as time goes on. To meet this we should encourage rifle practice among schoolboys, and indeed among all classes, as well as in the military services, by every means in our power.

"Thus, and not otherwise, may we be able to assist in preserving the peace of the world. Fit to hold our own against the strong nations of the earth, our voice for peace will carry to the ends of the earth. Unprepared, and therefore unfit, we must sit dumb and helpless to defend ourselves, protect others, or preserve peace. The first step — in the direction of preparation to avert war if possible, and to be fit for war if it should come — is to teach our men to shoot."

There was a similar idea in Great Britain at the same time. Shooting clubs were very popular and common. Childrens comics carried advertisements for air rifles and marksmanship was regarded as fine thing for any boy to learn as it was a considered vital in the protection of our King & Country.

Sad how things have changed.

T.R. was a real leader. although he came from the privigaged class, he put the good of the nation ,and it's people ahead of the special interests of the day. imagine a REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT TODAY,smashing the economic crippling grip, that exxon has on this country, as standard oil would have had, in his day, if old ted didn,t stand up and take action. as an environmentalist, he would be demonized by the right today. as a hunter, the left would tear him to pieces. being a combat soilder, he would be swift boated by the chicken hawks. where have you gone theodore roosevelt? our nation needs you!!!!!

Can you imagine the firestorm that would result if a President said such a thing today?

If they could convince TR to run again I would do two things I have never done before.....contribute 2 grand to a campaign fund and take several weeks offer from work to volunteer on his campaign staff!

Can you imagine the butt whipping TR would have handed out after Chavez came to this country and gave a speech at the UN like he did last year?

If TR were President now he'd be planning another 'big adventure' after he left office like he did when he went to Africa.....except I see him going hunting in Northern Pakistan/SouthernAfghanistan.

Taking care of unfinished buisness!

Yes, he was my favorite, too. I have a few books written by him and about him. Some historians believe he was probably bi-polar, which allowed him the drive and intensity to do all of the things he did in his life.

Too bad we can't get him back. I wonder what Teddy would think and do today.

When my local gunshop had a TR Commemorative Model 94 rifle (essentially a Model 64 with a pistol grip stock) behind the counter, I snatched it up, hang the price.

I intend to shoot it too. Bully, TR would say, I think. I treasure it as a little piece of the man that really deserves his place on Mt. Rushmore.

Don't get me wrong, because TR is one of my heroes, but he moved considerably leftward after his Presidency. His pride lead him to run under the "Bull Moose" banner and hand the presidency to Woodrow Wilson.

Like Reagan, he was a man and though great, also flawed. They nailed the last perfect one to a tree...

and once he made a whole speech with a 50 cal bullet in his chest. He was shot before getting to the podium and decided not to cancel his address.

Maybe it was the speech on proficient shooting?

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee, Wis., October 14 -- A desperate attempt to kill Col. Theodore Roosevelt tonight failed when a 32 caliber bullet aimed directly at the heart of the former president and fired at short range by the crazed assailant, spent part of its force in a bundle of manuscript containing the address which Co. Roosevelt was to deliver tonight, and wounded the Progressive candidate for President.

Col. Roosevelt delivered part of his scheduled address with the bullet in his body, his blood staining his white vest as he spoke to a huge throng at the auditorium. Later, he collapsed, weakened by the wound, and was rushed to Emergency hospital.

Shot in Front of Hotel

The shooting took place in the street in front of the Hotel Gilpatrick. Col. Roosevelt reached Milwaukee shortly after 5 o'clock and making his way through the crowd which had gathered at the station, entered an automobile and was driven to a private dining room on the main floor with the members of the party on his private car.

After dinner Col. Roosevelt stood up, waving his hat in answer to the cheers of the crowd. The assassin was standing in the crowd a few feet from the automobile. He pushed his way to the side of the car and, raising his gun, fired.

Henry F. Cochems, former athlete and Chairman of the Progressive Party speaker's bureau, and Elbert Martin, Roosevelt's stenographer, seized the man and held him until policemen came up. John Schrank, who is small of stature, admitted firing the shot and said that "any man looking for a third term ought to be shot."

Col. Roosevelt barely moved as the shot was fired. Before the crowd knew what had happened, Martin, who is six feet tall and a former football player, had landed squarely on the assassin's shoulders and borne him to the ground. He threw his right arm about the man's neck with a death-like grip and with his left arm seized the hand that held the revolver. In another second he had disarmed him.

All this happened within a few seconds and Col. Roosevelt stood gazing rather curiously at the man who attempted his life before the stunned crowd realized what was going on.

Col. Roosevelt refused to allow doctors to examine him at first. Later, doctors made an examination of the wound and announced "Col. Roosevelt is suffering from a superficial flesh wound. Bleeding was insignificant. He soon traveled on to the Auditorium where he was scheduled to give a speech."

Bullet Perforates Manuscript

The manuscript of his speech doubtless had done much to save his life. When he had come upon the platform at the Auditorium he drew the manuscript from his vest pocket during his first few words, the torn sheets of paper, showing many stains blood, showed also that the bullet had gone through the manuscript.

"You see," cried the colonel holding up the manuscript so that the audience could see the bullet hole through the sheets of paper, "It takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose."
"I'll tell you what living is. You get up when you feel like it. You fry yourself some eggs. You see what kind of a day it is."

The sad fact of life today is that our nation along with many have moved towards more socialism. Socialism in order to survive must need blind obediance from the populace. Such things as hunting and shooting tend to instill a sense of independence in people thus would question the motives of the government. So such things by many power hungry politicians are discouraged . They don't want a well armed citizenry because the well armed citizenry could very well send them all packing back home, or worse.

I am sure that there are a few folks out there today who could be as much the man as ole TR was, unfortunately our Society has become such a bunch of sniveling, weak willed, gutless panzies that I doubt he would get much run. Look at the problems that a free thinking man, who pushes person responsibility, and freedom has! (Read Ron Paul). I certainly admired TR but I suspect that he would not have faired so well. Just as Churchill would be out of place in England, TR was a man who we desperately need now, but whose time is past!

The absolutely true and saddest part of this discussion it that TR could never get a nomination to run. Heck, look at what we have today for candidates. Anyone, who was worthy to hold office did not stand a chance to run. Sorry circumstance indeed!
