OT: The garden is alive!
Well, we planted a garden at the end of February. I added watermelon and cucumber at the end of March... We did have to cover the tomatos a couple of times to prevent frost bite but it was a good decision to go-in early. Here's the garden now - the tomatos are loaded with fruit, the jalepos also have fruit - the zucs have taken off and the watermelon and cucs have come up and are off to a good start. The only problem is the bush beans - they seem to be struggling....

Instead of Bush beans, you should plant Obama beans. They are chock-full of fertilizer!
My taters and onions are doing really well, and the sweet corn is poking out of the ground. Still a bit early for cukes, peppers, maters, and beans here, but the plants are off to a good start in the greenhouse.

The snow has melted form my garden here in central Maine,
and next week it oughta be dry enough to tun over. It's been
a long, snowy winter. It wasn't all that cold, although we did see
-18 F. But we had A LOT of snow.
I'm looking forward to planting by Memorial Day.
O.S.O.K. - it's lookin' good.

Re: OT: The garden is alive!
Thanks guys... we are in town and there are no varmints other than the insect/worm type that cause any problems.
The beans may just need a bit more water... not sure. Or maybe it's the acidity of the manuer mix we worked in...

I just planted today. I put in tomatos, peppers, broccoli, aspargus, romain and head lettuce, corn, eggplant. I still have the onions and potatos to plant. Your garden is very much more mature than mine. I added blueberries to the garden also this year. Just to see how it goes. Well done.

Keep it up Hobie. . . You'll get a "nastygram" from yourself telling you to move this to the political sectionHobie wrote:We're hoping those will be re-named "has beans"...Jeff Quinn wrote:... Obama beans. They are chock-full of fertilizer!
About the Texas warm weather-with it comes plenty of hail. We've had several tornado scares and hail already. My dad's garden got pounded to bits last Tuesday by egg-sized hail (with more than a few tennis ball sized ). Just another excuse for me to be lazy and not try to grow one. I've used the deer as an excuse for too long

Re: OT: The garden is alive!
Not to mention that come July, the garden will be subjected to 100 degree days... which burns a lot of plants up. The peppers seem to thrive though... along with okra

These are made a few miles from here, at least they were invented here. They offer a lot of advantages for amateur or experienced gardeners alike. They can be expensive for low yeild crops but are great for tomatoes and the like. http://www.earthbox.com/

I turned my garden over today. This is the first time it has dried out enough to do that this year. We are still getting frost every night that it is clear. (6 of the last 9 days!)
