Marlin 44 magnum or 45-70

Post by HEAD0001 »

I am looking to buy a 44 magnum or a 45-70 Marlin rifle. I want the straight grip-not the pistol grip. I would like to buy one that has anb upgraded piec e of Walnut on it. I want the wood to be extra nice. Has anyone seen one in a gun shop anywhere??? Available for sale??? Tom.

There's a Marlin LTDIII listed over in the classifieds. I have one that never part with. Straight stck, no checkering , 18" Oct. bbl. Mine has a nice piece of walnut on it.

It's lsted at 799. which i tink is kinda steep. I got mine a year ago NIB off Auction Arms for 580.00

I'd get the 45-70. You can load a 45-70 like a 44 but you CANNOT load a 44 to act like a 45-70

I love my Marlin .44 mag. It's a beautiful gun and shoots like it was made for me. The caliber depends on you. I havn't had the pleasure of shooting a 45-70 yet, but that is on the list. Get what feels right in your gut.

The 44 should be a whole lot cheaper to shoot, and if you've become a recoil wimp in your old age like I have you'd load them both down to 357 levels anyway, so I'd vote 357
I shot both the 44 and 45-70 some years ago and I did notice that while the 45-70 recoils backwards the 44 recoiled upwards and I found the 44 unpleasant to shoot as a result. Actually I still enjoy the occasional shot from a 45-70 as long as its only going sloooooowwwwly.

+1, I have both and each fills its own niche.. Get both, but get the .44 first since it will be cheaper to shoot. Get the .45-70 when you feel up to pressing out handloads to make it affordable.

i own a 44 mag win 94 and i love it. i also just recently purchased a h&r 45-70. the recoil is much greater with the 45-70. it is a bigger bullet traveling the same speed as the .44. i can't imagine the .45-70 being loaded down to the .44 and maintain any usable accuracy. it would be nice and something to play with. i do know the .44 is cheaper to shoot and can be loaded with the .44 specials.

Tom,
You might want to consider upgrading the wood on one of your guns.
www.treebonecarving.com has some nice looking wood for what seem to be reasonable prices.
