World record halibut - 485 lbs.

I've tangled with some 100+ lbs "barn doors" off Homer, Alaska, but this....yowzah....

The Alaska state record of 459 lbs is not far off that mark.
I saw a photo of it hanging over the bed of a pickup truck (3 sides), and it was an impressive sight.

Wow! That's a pretty good sized fishy.

I pretty much think I'd rather eat my catch rather than sell it. That is unless I hadn't paid for the fishing trip yet.

That is one big, ugly fish.

:o
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

A new world record Atlantic Halibut of 540 pounds was also recently caught off northern Norway.
They can reach up to 15ft in length, weigh up to 700lbs and can live for 50 years.

There are a lot of world records. First there are two species of large halibut, second there are a lot of organizations keeping 'their' version of the records. Most modern 'records' are of sport caught fish and they are considerably shy of maximum potential weight. For example Alaskan wildlife officials report a 1957 commercially netter fish with a calculated weight of 900 +/- pounds. Many older records from a century ago report maximum weights in the 900-1,000 pound category.

I love halibut. I wonder, if I started at the tail, how far I could eat before I ran out of time.

The Mrs and I fished for 2 days for Alaskan halibut out of Homer a few years ago. We sent back 200lbs of vacuum-packed fresh halibut. After about 120lbs or so, we were giving it away to family and friends. We were so sick of it, I couldn't eat fish for months.

Then came caribou season...
