You can get a "canned" elk hunt with a guaranteed animal & free meat processing for another $200 or $300.
It isn't considered "sporting" if they tie your elk to the tree with a rope shorter than 10'.
You're still better off than with going to Canada where most jurisdictions require a licensed guide which will cost you a coupla hundred $ a day at least.

An elk combination license includes an elk tag, a deer "A" tag (either sex, either species), upland game bird license, and annual fishing. The elk is not "guaranteed", but the deer and upland birds might as well be if you put any effort at all into it.
It's High, I agree, but as long as there are more people applying than they have licenses available, the prices will continue to go up.
I buy the deer combo license every year. It's high, but I can hunt for 1 to 2 weeks solid and find deer every day. I can mentally "pull the trigger" on several deer before I decide to shoot one. The one I shoot may be the biggest I ever shot before or it may be the best shot I've gotten with my optics-free levergun, or it may be the one I called to me with a coyote call.
I've never been on a canned deer hunt, but I bet they'd lose patience with me real quick after I let 20 or 30 deer walk. For me its not about the shooting, its about the hunting.

I hunt up by the Milk River in Area 6. The deer population really got hammered between a bad winter and blue tongue disease. Generally see tons of deer but this year we hardly saw any and most were yearlings. I only saw 1 mature Whitetail buck. Locals said 80-90 perecent of the Whitetail were gone. Muleys faired a bit better. Population recovery was variously estimated between 3 and 8 years. Really sad.

The area we'd be in if we go would be around Bozeman . I think area 360 , 310 or something like that .jjames wrote:I hunt up by the Milk River in Area 6. Hunt the west side of the continental divide if you want to stay away from hemorrhagic fever die offs better elk hunting anyway or hunt the big hole area. you just have to get a # and stand in line with the wolves for deer elk & moose. danny

Amen to that--sometimes shooting a deer ruins a good hunt... :)rbertalotto wrote:but I bet they'd lose patience with me real quick after I let 20 or 30 deer walk. For me its not about the shooting, its about the hunting.
