Deer hunting photo, Lake Tahoe 1880

Post by Mike D. »

This photo shows a small buck hanging from a tree and tied up dogs resting in the foreground. What is significant are the Winchesters leaning against the pine. There is a cocked deluxe 1876, a '73 and another '76. The wood on the deluxe looks to be high grade, possibly 4X. WHEW! I'd like to know where that one ended up. I believe that it possibly belonged to Harry O. Comstock, of the famous mining family. He is the man on the horse in the immediate background.Image

Interesting method used to tie the dogs. Looks like a quick slip knot in a lentgh of rope.

A very slight restraint so they don't go wander off.

:)
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Mike,
One sure bet is that those boys have money. Who else could afford a deluxe Winchester and a camera in those days. :D

Yes, a very good pic; deer, nice rifles, dogs and horses. What else is there? Thanks for sharing!

So what kind of dogs do you guess those are? Shorthaired, solid dark color.

Man, what a good size deer for the table.
I've always wanted a 76; I think they were far more popular in the West than folks realize.

I shot a moose with it almost 100 years later...

It isn't really what you would consider a moose caliber. It is a 40-60 and not much more potent than a 41 magnum handgun. It was probably the first and last moose killed with a 40-60 in over 100 years...

I hunted the Tahoe area this last season up near Martis Peak. Being the only hunter in the area was nice. Too many mountain bikers to count and not a single deer spotted.
